I'm mixed race too(white father/black mother) and I haven't worn my hair long for years, I wear it very short. I am 29 now, I got my hair cut short when I was 15 and have worn it short since.
My problem was, that I was never really satisfied with my hair long regardless of the products I used. My hair was very unmanageable.
But I found out I got just as much attention from guys with a cute, very short, hairstyle as with longer hair. I am married now with a baby girl.
Have you considered going to a very short, easy to manage style? Add some long earrings, and do your makeup right, and you might look very attractive!
If you do keep your hair long, call up some beauty salons that specialize in African-American hair. I'm sure there are some where you live in southern California. They would be able to tell you what products to use.
