Hi its me Shani again, and right now i want to cry. Let me start at the very beginng. When I was about 6 years old my mom gave me a perm which really took my hair out bad,but it grew back a little when i was in third grade. I mean i could actually tie my hair under my chin. But all of a sudden it started to come out,so my mom made me cut it ,now it stops on my neck and i really hate it. Could someone please give me some suggestions. Right now i am 14 years old and I don't really have a good hair type. Should i still get a perm, get braids. How often do i wash my hair and what shampoo do you recommend, and what other treatments do i use. I know your wondering why aren't you asking your mommy this stuff. THe truth is that I'm mixed, my great-grandmother was white, and my mom has good hair but i guess i took after my dad and she doesn't really care about my hair, just hers so please help!!!!!!!!!!!

Honey, you need to take care of the hair you have and not the hair you want. I'm also mixed and still struggle with my curly/wavy, "good" hair. We all have our issues with the hair we were given, but as a black woman, you need to be proud of what you have and work from there. Stop wishing for white hair- and it's not "good" hair, it's just white hair, your hair is good too. Take CARE of your hair- moisturize it regularly, wash it once a week at the MOST, but it's better to wash it once every two weeks, STOP putting heat in it all the time and STOP pulling at it brushing it all the time. It's difficult for tortured hair to grow. You need to love the hair you have and what it can do and stop treating it so badly. Then maybe it will grow. You'll learn these things as you get older, but I wanted to tell you that you do not have bad hair, just because it has a coarser texture. It took me getting to college and learning about other people's hair to appreciate my own.

LET YOUR HAIR REST

February 26 2004, 11:13 AM

I RECOMMEND THAT YOU TRY ONE OF THE DRAWSTRING PONY TAILS AND ALLOW YOUR HAIR TO REST. IN THE MEANTIME, SHAMPOO AND CONDITION YOUR HAIR EVERY TWO WEEKS OR AS LONG AS YOU CAN GO WITHOUT SHAMPOOING AS TO NOT RINSE AWAY THE ESSENTIAL NATURAL OILS. ALSO TO TAME YOUR HAIR FOR A PONYTAIL STYLE AND MAKE IT LAY DOWN, USE A CONDITIONING GEL SUCH AS "ECOSTYLER". DO NOT USE AMPRO OR ANY OF THE HARSH REALLY DARK BROWN GELS. ALWAYS USE A LARGE "SCRUNCHY" OR PONYTAIL HOLDER AND NOT A RUBBERBAND. YOUR HAIR WILL GROW BACK QUICKLY AND HEALTHY. EVERY NOW AND THEN SET YOUR PONYTAIL IN DIFFERENT REGIONS OF YOUR HEAD SO THAT YOU WILL NOT PUT TOO MUCH STRESS IN ONE AREA FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. WHEN YOU DECIDE TO WHERE YOUR HAIR DOWN USE MOISTURIZERS AND NOT OILS OR GREASE. MOISTURIZERS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE IN MIXED GRADE HAIR. OTHERWISE YOUR HAIR WILL SEEM LIKE YOU ARE NEVER PUTTING ENOUGH OIL IN IT. YOU STAND A RISK OF CLOGGING THE PORES, AN ITCHY SCALP, AND A FLAT LOOKING STYLE. I RECOMMEND LUSTRASILK OIL MOISTURIZER. GOD BLESS YOU HONEY!

The media should stop advertising silky smooth hair all the time and give black people a chance to be proud who they are. When I was in elementary school they made fun ofme because I had long and wavy hair not smooth and straight and pressed all the kids were black and always got their hair done and I felt ugly and ungroomed. Now I fell better about it .Being mixed is kind of hard to a certain extint if your mixed you cant really do eneything people with coarse hair can because it cant get worse

Try massaging your scalp with 100% jojoba oil and rub a little on your hair keep your hair moisturized with leave in conditioners. Redken anti snap works really good. Biosilk shampoo and conditioners work good too.

shea butter

October 26 2005, 7:13 PM

my hair likes to act a fool too. the best things i do for moisture is products with shea butter. not too much cause it can get heavy and greasy. also make sure when looking for shea butter hair treatments that shea is listed in the first three to five ingredients. that way you know that you are actually getting enough shea butter in the product. i'm sure you know this but always sleep in a silk bonnet, when you condition your hair cover with a plastic cap and let it sweat. also some of the best results with hair comes when you put the products in your hair while it is soaking wet. that way the dry to a nice moisturized finish without being heavy.
