I am African American. I literally, have regular African American hair.. it is fine and kinky at the same time.. it is never wavy.. when i get in the pool and come out it gets really frizzy.. .just to give you an idea of my hair.
When I was young(11-12 years old) I had a wave nouveau and my hair grew and grew.. but was always greasy. But it seems to me Black hair loves moisture and when you constantly feed it .it grows.
From that point I wanted to be like all the other little girls with straight hair so in high school (1994) I decided to cut all my hair off and grow my hair out and relax it. From high school to the beginning of college.. I had horrible hair.. it was dry and week and never grew past my shoulders..It would break and eventually it broke so bad i had relaxer damaged spots in the lower back of my hairline.. so it was horrible..
While in college, I started wanting to know more about my hair wondering why is it I and many other black women have so many problems growing our hair.
So I started testing a regiment on my hair and it half way works.. so if anyone can help me out with the rest please email me .. My email is listed if not its chocolateflower1@yahoo.com
Okay so here's what i do In conjunctions with relaxers
As of the fall 2005 on a daily basis.. I take
1) I started taking this probably in sept. 2005 a great hair pill called "Good Hair" it runs just about $20.00 a bottle which last for about a month. I take 1-2 pills a day. I try to drink at least 5-8 glasses of water. It contains a lot of supplements like biotin, vitamin a,c,d,e, b1, zinc.. and lots of other stuff--ive noticed a vast improvement on this alone.
2)since feb. of 2005 ive been taking about a tablespoon of flaxseed oil.
Okay so thats the basics now with my hair, I try to limit heat on my hair so i might put heat on it once a week and thats being extreme.. Im a real estate agent so sometimes i like that ultra sleek look. but when i use this my hair dresser uses a ceramic iron.. not the plated kind but a real ceramic iron. But mostly i deal with rollersets.. and i have her pluck them out gently and wear that.. I also go to the gym so usuallly my curl sets last a week. I try to get my hair professionally done at minimum every 2 weeks.. I think you should never go longer than 2 weeks without a proper conditioner and deep conditioner.
As far as what I put on my hair, i try to stay away from heavy petroleum based greases.. bc this totally weighs down on your hair and its not doing anythign for it.. My Mom, God bless her soul, used this on my hair when I was young.. and the bloody thing never worked lol.. So now I deal mainly with oils like shea butter which i love love love.. olive oil or a complex oil that contains shea butter in combination with other oils. I also use moisturizers like after the gym to replenish some of the lost oil.. Again most of my stuff that i have contain shea butter.. I just love how it makes my hair look and feel.
Oh my relaxers honestly hair dressers tell you to come every 6-8 weeks but if i feel my hair isnt ready for a relaxer i will try to push it as long as i can.. which most are extremely against this but i feel that there isnt enough new growth. why would i relax it if there's nothing substantial to relax.. just my personal opinion.
So the result of this.. Again im a regular black girl with kinky hair if its not relaxed. I do have native american and caucasian american in my family but we are talking like 4-5 generations removed soo my hair is not wavy it is dry, thin/thick--lol, thats what i call it.. bc it seems thick but its really thin.
so here's the results.. My hair has grown to the middle of my back based on what im telling you here.
I am extremely pleased from the results but only one thing remains an issue for me. I think bc I have been relaxing my hair for an extended period of time that it is starting to thin the top of my head or it could be my hair stylist application of the relaxer. I know a lot of black women suffer from thinning areas in the crown.. And I know there has to be a way to retard the thinning or a way to stop it. Im not saying my hair is bald but its definitely a different texture than what it feels like in the back of my hair.. So if anyone have suggestions about thickening your hair please be so kind to email me. I hope what I have wrote here can at least help someone who doesnt know about the power of supplements. I think thats the key .. to constantly moisture your hair and body so from the inside and out..
but again my problem is creating thickness .. but i dont know if thickness is achieveable if you're regularly relaxing your hair. Or perhaps the relaxer.. I get my hair relaxed on wed. I will let ya'll know what type she uses bc i honestly dont know.. From my reading on the board and what ive heard:
Mizani is supposedly good and the Arosci by revlon.. but im not certain of these relaxers.. so again if you shed some hair light on these that would be great.
I look forward to hearing from anyone
again my questions are:
How can you prevent thinning ? thicken hair?
which relaxer is suitable for thin hair? Sensitive scalp?
what do you think about Mizani?
what do you think about Arosci by Revlon?
You should try to deep condition at least once a week and limit the amount of heat used on your hair. Also make sure that you moisturize because if your hair is dry it will easily break off. When you wash your hair you should try to let it air dry and not use the blowdryer because it can easily damage the hair
