Cholera killed hundred's of people in Barawe district of Lower Shabele [Shabeelaha Hoose]
BARAAWE Jan 7, 2001 (BP)-Almost 3 weeks ago cholera spread in the district of Barawe and the surrounding villages causing death of hundred's people. Sultan Omar Faqi Haji Awiis declared the situation as disastrous. With no medical staff and medical aid insight the daily death toll is said to have surpassed more than 60 people.
People who cannot afford buying the dehydration fluids, which jumped to 15000 Sh.SO a piece are condemned to death. The most affected area are said to be Maringuway, Erile, Mudun, Heeji Maxaad, Sablale and the city of Barawe.
Another emerging story is the increase in Tuberculosis infection, which is believed to have affected almost 30% of the poor people who have nothing to eat.
Interestingly, the international NGO refused to work in lower Shabelle because of the insecurity. They (NGO) said that aid could not be reached in the area because unscrupulous Moriyan operating in the area will loot everything.
Donations from relatives leaving abroad is said to have reached the area, but the large scale disaster is difficult to halt. Please either help or express your support to these community, which seems to have been condemned to extermination.
