but I can't agree with your thesis that there are no mechanicals in stores. Look in Wal-Mart. Or Target. Or Macy's, Costco, Sam's Club. They all carry mechanical watches. The vast majority of their inventory is quartz, but they all stock some automatics, in my experience.
