I've learned the hard way that one must be very careful when using a rotary tool to buff a gold or silver-toned plated bezel. The only success I've had is using a buffing wheel that has NO POLISH OR GRIT on it. You must use a very slow speed on the rotary tool and use very light pressure, stopping to check your progress every few seconds. The plating applied on vintage Timex watches is easily polished away to the base metal under the plating. I have had some success polishing out very light marks or scratches on those plated bezels but I've also ruined several of them by polishing away the gold or silver plating.
