those early "Nuremberg Egg" timepieces were so heavy that they were often worn on a chain around the owner's neck. Up until about 1724 when a new type of escapement was invented (the balance wheel / hairspring type that we are familiar with today), they used a "verge" escapement which was notoriously inaccurate. One could actually consider himself lucky if his "egg" was keeping time to within one HOUR per DAY!
How times have changed. Today, if my watch is off by a second per month, it gets on my nerves! My, how technoguy can spoil us.
