have found a 70 year old leather watch strap that is still intact and wearable! Isn't leather, which is really just animal skin, a biodegradable material? I would have thought that, after that long a time period of being exposed to the atmosphere, the leather would be so dried out and brittle that it would fail shortly after being put into service again. Those Alaskan calves and pigs back then must have had some mighty tough hides or else they really knew how to process leather in those days!

Yes, "rare" certainly seems appropriate in this case.
