| Tim,
You need something to give you a bit of leverage. I have a medium sized screwdriver with a thin flat blade. I have a great success rate with this. It's opened cases that have been welded shut with corrosion.
Use the think blade to get it started, then something bigger to pop it off.
You could also try a small amount of penetrating oil to help.
