CW, see if you can find a pair of 3/4inch Cuban heeled shoes - maybe even 1 inch, and preferably actual Dance Shoes - you can see these on the bay, do a search for "gents dance shoes" - expect to pay around $50/$70 or so for these. They will raise your height by (apparently) half the heel height, but they may take a time to get used to.
Why Cuban heels? well that will help give you the hip action in salsa by pushing your weight slightly forward and force your hips over your feet. Note that "proper" dance shoes have chromed leather soles, and will weigh less than half the weight of "normal" leather soled shoes. They are NOT
suitable to wear outdoors or in wet areas, the sole WILL
rip apart and destroy itself if you persist.
They will last for as long as the uppers if worn purely for dancing. If you can't find or don't want dance shoes, you can purchase the chrome letaher soles and heels separately (off the web again) and have a shoemaker/repairer fit them to the normal shoes. The Minute repair type guys should even be able to do this.
Real dances shoes won't make you dance any better mind, but they will help you with sore feet and long salsa nights
Mrs CW should look at dance shoes also, same reasons, maybe a maximum 1and3/4 inch heel with the heel filled in for support of the ankles - that bit is important for ladies, strappy shoes give little support to the ankle joints and put extra strain on the rest of the leg muscle groups. Again, they come with chrome leather soles, and same provisos - not for outside wear etc.
