This is my first post do please bear with me. I am trying to identify a model of Timex that my grand father had for some years, which has now disappeared and I am trying to replace it. It was a very good timekeeper although not expensive and may be described as follows - expanding gold plated bracelet with raised and shaped pattern on the outside and inside links pointing slightly diagonally. Gold plated square face with sides of the square slightly longer than top and bottom. White face with gold numbers and fingers and may have had a second hand. Was mechanical in movement and would have been a current model about 1960. I suspect that it was probably mass produced and may not have had a model name. I came in a black and white plastic hinged box with gold Timex name on it and inside was a raised area over which the watch fitted sideways and was held in place by the bracelet. I don't know if this is enough to go on but would be grateful for eny help. Thanks.

Rectangular format Timexes of that period were either a Monroe or "Super Thin" but most likely a Monroe. Monroes came in various styles from the early fifties to the early 60's. You can see some photos posted here using our Search feature. There is also a 1961 brochure on the Manuals tab showing that year's Monroe. Obviously, a photograph would help if available.

You can try to look it up in the catalogs:

- Under "Vintage Catalogs", pick
- "1959-1962 [...]", page 19 for the Monroe series
- "1961-1971 [...]", page 4.66 for the Super-Thin series

Thanks for the info and yes it is a Monroe. I've had a look at the catalog and also done some rooting in the Archive and it is the same as TimexRick's and George's gold plated one in the thread of the 17th September 2011.I'm guessing my grandfather's would be the 1960 model as it was a present from my grandmother on their Golden Wedding which was that year. I'm presuming from the catalog that the 1959 model was a black face only and so my grandfather's was probably 1960. Can anyone give me a little history on the model as to years and where made and of course where I might get one and approximate value?

Finding any Monroe is not easy. Since this one is a UK version it would be even more of a task to find it here in the US. Value? well, the general response used is "what the market will bare". Which in reality for a vintage Timex is quite low in terms of dollars.

The one I have, like all of the other Monroes in my collection were made in Gt. Britain. In particular, the movements are signed Scotland indicating they were made at the Dundee factory. The model you identified was date stamped Y 8, but I'm not sure what that means, perhaps 1958. I believe that this Monroe model is quite scarce but you could put a notice on our Sales and Trades page and you might shake one loose.

Thanks for the information and I will certainly put a want in the Sales and Trades Section. My experience of these sorts of thing is that they turn up in the most unlikely places. I'll keep the Forum informed.
