Hi there. I'm 21 and I've lived in the same house for my entire life. We're in north western New Jersey and our house was built just a couple years before I was born and we're the only people who have lived here, however my mom and I have both experienced things that make us feel that there is someone else in our house. I think I've experienced the most activity in my house and I'm not sure if it's that I'm the most open to the idea of someone else being there or if I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. I have always felt uneasy in my house, if I was ever left at home for a few minutes while my mom picked up something at the store I never felt like I was by myself and always felt that someone was watching me.
In the basement of the house I have had a decent amount of experiences mostly because during high school I spent my time in the basement because this is where our computers are. During the summer I was up pretty late and because our computer needed some updates I had to restart it. When I restarted the computer the monitor went black and I could see reflections of things behind me (which is always what happened) and I saw a woman in a long dress walk behind me into the wall. I left the computer off and got out of the basement as quickly as possible after seeing that. I have also heard footsteps on the first floor when I was in the basement and everyone else in my house had been asleep and when going upstairs no one was there.
On the second floor is where I feel the most uncomfortable, in the stairway and in the hallway. When I was younger I refused to walk in the hallway by myself at night and insisted on having my mom walk me if I needed to go to the bathroom. My one friend has spent the night and without telling her my feelings about the hallway she told me she can't stand in the hall at night for very long because she feels like someone is standing right next to her.
I go to college and live in dorms that are pretty haunted and I have heard voices and music that shouldn't be there, I've seen apparitions, and I've been touched before. However, I feel much more at ease at college than I do at my house. I feel like I'm unsure of how to deal with it because I don't know why it's in my house because no one has ever lived here before us. I think what bothers me the most is not knowing what it's doing here and if I've experienced these things because it wants help or if it's just something residual. I'm not sure what to do about it, if you have any advice I'd be really happy to hear it.
Hi Rebecca,
Actually, it could be that what you are experiencing is attached to the land, and would have nothing at all to do with your house... or it could be that you and/or other members of your family are sensitive to them, and that will attract spirits to you. Other possibilities are that a spirit is attached to an object in your house, like an antique, or that there really isn't a spirit with a consciousness there, but is what we call a residual haunting (this is when the earth records an event, and when conditions are right, replays it--like watching a DVD, you cannot interact with it).
If at any time you would like an investigation, please feel free to ask us. All of our services are free of charge, and we conduct them very discreetly.
If an investigation is out of the realm of possibility, then I would suggest trying a technique called Setting Boundaries. This is where you and your family tell the spirits what you want from them. Essentially telling them the rules of your house. Some examples are "I don't want to see you." "I feel your presence, please leave me alone."
Please contact me at ohzonecollects@comcast.net if you would like complete instructions on setting your boundaries, if you would be interested in an investigation, or just need more advice.
