Here we go . . . again --17.5 tons of animals killed in DC

and I suspect it has got no better:

The data is from 2007.

http://www.virginia.gov/vdacs_ar/cgi-bin/Vdacs_search.cgi?link_select=facility&form=fac_select&fac_num=248&year=2007

Summarized, 143 cats and 526 dogs were surrendered by owners. If I'm not mistaken, an animal surrendered by the owner is euthanized within 24-48 hours of surrender. Of 1352 total animals, 1283 (363 cats, 920 dogs), were euthanized. Twenty-seven animals were reclaimed, and only 33 were adopted.

A metric ton is 2200 pounds; a "short ton" is 2000 pounds. So, if my math is correct, by assuming an average weight per cat of 5 pounds x 363, and an average weight per dog of 40 pounds x 920, this equals 38615 pounds, divided by 2200 equals 17.5 metric tons. My math skills leave a lot to be desired, but I think it's pretty close.
