Obscene Health Insurance Profits!!!

by Me O My

More Democrati Lies and half truths. Taco Bell makes more than heath insurance companies.

FACT CHECK: Health insurers' profits 35th of 53
By CALVIN WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer Calvin Woodward, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 53 mins ago
WASHINGTON In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making "immoral" and "obscene" returns while "the bodies pile up."

But in pillorying insurers over profits, the critics are on shaky ground. Ledgers tell a different reality.

Health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent, give or take a point or two. That's anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries, even some beleaguered ones.

Profits barely exceeded 2 percent of revenues in the latest annual measure. This partly explains why the credit ratings of some of the largest insurers were downgraded to negative from stable heading into this year, as investors were warned of a stagnant if not shrinking market for private plans.

Insurers are an expedient target for leaders who want a government-run plan in the marketplace. Such a public option would force private insurers to trim profits and restrain premiums to compete, the argument goes. This would "keep insurance companies honest," says President Barack Obama.

The debate is loaded with intimations that insurers are less than straight, when they are not flatly accused of malfeasance.

The insurers may not have helped their case by commissioning a report that looked primarily at the elements of health care legislation that might drive consumer costs up while ignoring elements aimed at bringing costs down. Few in the debate seem interested in a true balance sheet.

A look at some claims, and the numbers:

THE CLAIMS

_"I'm very pleased that (Democratic leaders) will be talking, too, about the immoral profits being made by the insurance industry and how those profits have increased in the Bush years." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who also welcomed the attention being drawn to insurers' "obscene profits."

_"Keeping the status quo may be what the insurance industry wants. Their premiums have more than doubled in the last decade and their profits have skyrocketed." Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen, member of the Democratic leadership.

_"Health insurance companies are willing to let the bodies pile up as long as their profits are safe." A MoveOn.org ad.

THE NUMBERS:

Health insurers posted a 2.2 percent profit margin last year, placing them 35th of 53 industries on the Fortune 500 list. As is typical, other health sectors did much better drugs and medical products and services were both in the top 10.

The railroads brought in a 12.6 percent profit margin. Leading the list: network and other communications equipment, at 20.4 percent.

HealthSpring, the best performer in the health insurance industry, posted 5.4 percent. That's a less profitable margin than was achieved by the makers of Tupperware, Clorox bleach and Molson and Coors beers.

The star among the health insurance companies did, however, nose out Jack in the Box restaurants, which only achieved a 4 percent margin.

UnitedHealth Group, reporting third quarter results last week, saw fortunes improve. It managed a 5 percent profit margin on an 8 percent growth in revenue.

Van Hollen is right that premiums have more than doubled in a decade, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study that found a 131 percent increase.

But were the Bush years golden ones for health insurers?

Not judging by profit margins, profit growth or returns to shareholders. The industry's overall profits grew only 8.8 percent from 2003 to 2008, and its margins year to year, from 2005 forward, never cracked 8 percent.

The latest annual profit margins of a selection of products, services and industries: Tupperware Brands, 7.5 percent; Yahoo, 5.9 percent; Hershey, 6.1 percent; Clorox, 8.7 percent; Molson Coors Brewing, 8.1 percent; construction and farm machinery, 5 percent; Yum Brands (think KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), 8.5 percent.

Was out there yesterday and her dad said the pressure was down in the brain and her stats was good. They are going to do a MRI with contrast today and depending on those results, if things are not changed or are looking better and may start bringing her out of the coma, Let's pray hard that she doesn't have any major brain damage or best yet none at all. Next Week

by WaveMojo

I wanna see more proud antics. I wanna see some more PRIDE. I'd like to see the entire stands empty onto the field. Celebrating IS NOT unsportsmanlike!!!If it were, football would be a very boring sport. But most of all I wanna see another BIG WIN. Somebody give Eddie a flag (a green one, not a yellow one)and a bullhorn! I sure hope we play a little better next week. Reed if you're reading this, lets see somemore breakout plays! Lower them shoulders and make a path! You dance around tryin to go untouched too much. Get fired up and come out with a strong burst. Austin Dotson laid it all on the line Friday. Rumblin Stumblin Tumblin down the field. Justin I know you got some big play potential in ya as fast as you are, you just got to accept the fact that you're gonna have to take some hits every now and them. Jukes and spins work good goin down the field with one or 2 to beat, but not off the line (rarely)! SPEED KILLS!! Now lets go put a hurtin on BURTON!!

We have a lot of players on the team that do not get any credit. If It was not for
#70 (Nick Lewis) kicking leg, we would have been in bigger trouble. Also #51 is
doing a good job when they put him in(Travis Fleming). Gavin Meade #11 is a very
good little ball player and #57(Cameron Vanover ) is also good. My heart goes out
to all the ones who practice every week and then do not get to play. #25 should
get to go in when we are having a good game and we are pretty far ahead.

I hate to bust your bubbles................I am a longtime greenwave fan and always will be, BUT I thought we looked absolutely pitiful Friday night, I can assure you had those penalties not came out towards the end of the game we would have been beaten. Our line looked bad, we have no passing whatsoever, all the way around we looked bad. Im afraid that we will be in for it come friday. Dont get me wrong, I support our team and we have a good bunch of boys but I think we've had a little luck on our sides in most of the games we've won this year.

I look for some changes this week.

But I don't understand why it is the responsibility of the coaching staff to keep fans from getting out of hand. Shouldn't it be or isn't that ultimately the responsibility of the school principal or in severe cases the officials themselves or even the police? Nick Lewis deserves a lot of credit for kick offs and field goals.

I wondered about Gavin Meade also he had some great runs early in the year.

Prayer in school

by I pick Republican

Pick your poison. Please tell me where I'm wrong. It's just the way I see it.

Republican Party...they are corrupt, dirty, dishonest, however they openly support the things I believe in or are PRO GOD PRO CHURCH PRO LIFE PRO BIBLE PRO PRAYER IN SCHOOL PRO GUN PRO GAY MARRIAGE and the list goes onthats their base. Got to keep your base happy if you want to get elected and reach out to those moderates. If you dont support your base you might as well get out.

Democratic Party...they are corrupt, dirty, dishonest, however they are openly opposed the things I oppose, ANTI all the things above. They are the party of separation of church and state. Got to keep your base happy if you want to get elected and reach out to those moderates. If you don't support your base you might as well get out.

Vote Republican you get Roberts, Alito.
Vote Democratic you get Sodo (the new one) Gingsburg.

If we can get enough Roberts and Alito we can turn this county around? Is my thinking logical?

Re: Prayer in school

by A Familiar Poster

The Republican party is not pro gay marriage. Just a minor correction there.

As a comment to your post overall, I must say people miscontrue the goals of most Democrats. It's not that Democrats are opposed to God, the Bible, or prayer. It's simply that Democrats wish to keep separate public institutions/government from religion. It's not the goal of Democrats to remove prayer from schools (well, I might add that there are some radicals that probably support that), it's the goal of Democrats to remove MANDATORY prayer from schools. No school can require or request that students pray in accordance with the principal of secularism established in the Constitution.

Now, of course, of a child wishes to have prayer before class, whether they be Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, or what have you, the school should not be able to infringe that right, and Democrats know this and support this.

Another irrational fear is that Democrats will somehow take gun rights away from people. In fact, very few Democrats support banning guns altogether. Most Democrats are moderate on the issue, but are labled anti-gun because they are anti-NRA. But what people fail to realize is that one can be anti-NRA and be a proud gun rights supporter/owner. The NRA is a group that spreads lies and opposes any type of regulation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. I'm anti-NRA, but I'm pro gun rights.

With that said, I side with most Democrats in that, the Constitution gives us the right to own a gun. Gives us the right to protect ourselves. However, I do support regulations on the types of guns people can own. I support the assault weapons ban, mandatory trigger locks on semi automatic weapons, gun background checks, and the forfeit of gun rights if one has commited a felony, as well as other regulations.

The central core of the Democratic party does not wish to infringe the right of the people to protect themselves.

The central core of the Democratic party does not wish to infringe the right of the people

by Contrarian

"The central core of the Democratic party does not wish to infringe the right of the people to protect themselves."

Isn't using "central core of the Democratic party" rather vague and generalized? Just who, or what is the 'central core' of the Democratic party? I'd like to know. Is it the voters or donors? Is it the candidates or office holders themselves? Is it the power bosses at the DNC? The state organizations? The local county committee or precinct chairmen? Central core could either cover a very great deal of territory or a very limited group.

At any rate, I think the Democratic party has worked very hard to earn its well deserved reputation and perception by most freedom loving Americans as a party that most definitely has done just about all it can do to limit our second amendment rights.

Eddie "The Devil" Rose

by Sense of Humor

Whatever happened to a sense of humor. Eddie is a great guy with a great sense of humor. Give the guy a break. I crack jokes all the time. Mother in law, republican, democrat, wife, self degrading, fat jokes, and if you do it long enough you may on occasion do or say something that some may feel go over the line or hurt someones feelings. If and when I do, I apologize. Those are the type of people I enjoy hanging around and I would guess 99.9% of others as well. I'm a bible believing, head strong Christian but who said it's bad sportsmanship if you don't help someone up after a hard hit or a tackle. If you do I admire that...if you don't, more power to you but I don't think that's a bad sportsman (if that's a word). However, if your not man enough to shake someone hand after the game, win or lose, boo you own club, then I think you are a badsportman. Those Wave fans that don't miss a game, that don't have a sense of humor, or wouldn't laugh at a good FART that's giving Eddie a hard time can kiss this right wing, republican, hind-end.

Let's me add what chaps my rump is you're not upset about not being able to say a prayer but mad as heck at Eddie. Get your priorities straight. I knew it was coming. They got rid of Hank and Joyce about 15 years ago.

Although that idiot doesn't represent the Wave fan base (but actually he is see as doing so), it was a total humiliation to things that have been taught to the players for many years, and that is sportsmanship win or lose.

There is NO EXCUSE, absolutely none, for what that man did after the game. Nobody should try make excuses for him.

That being said and acknowledged,we can't change what happened last night. We can strive to do better and the first step is forgiveness.

As for me i am and always have been proud of our Good Sportsman Ship at Clintwood, i have even gone to person who have traveled long distances and wished them a safe trip back home and tell them they played a good game.

I know it hurts, but it's time to let it go on the discussion board, and every other Wave Fan strive to exemplify our own sportsmanship and attempt to go on and not do anything like this ever again.

I think Rose made a big mistake but some of the ones from Wise who were the most upset were acting like bigger idiots than he was. He acted improper and quite a few Clintwood fans got onto him about it. He wasn't coming to try to beat anybody up or trying to fight. 2 wrongs do not make a right and I think the majority of the people took it for what it was. Stupid behavior but as someone said, it wasn't him alone and it wasn't just Clintwood fans, afterall it wasn't the Clintwood coach flagged.

I saw the game and stayed after the game. He did not get within 10 yards of a Wise player and taunt them. He was being followed by Wise's player #38 (to be exact)and that boy was following him across the field over to the home side hash marks and running his mouth the whole time Eddie was walking facing the Clintwood sideline. Once he got to the Clintwood sideline he tried to get our fans to cheer by throwing his arms in the air, not taunting no one or saying anything to anybody. Get your facts straight before you go and start a bunch of lies on somebody that was supporting his team. Just because you want to go and sit and look like a statue and NOT CHEER for the football team don't put down on the ones that does. If you want to talk about bad sports lets talk about Wise. That was very bad showing in sportsmanship!!

Thoughts from an Indian Fan

by Indian Fan

Well played game by both teams, the players did a good job and the refs. did their job. There were a couple of calls which could have went either way and would have impacted the game, but that's football. I can understand why our coach got upset but can't understand why he couldn't contain himself in a more professional manner, heat of the battle emotion-I guess.

As far as the end of the game and the Clintwood knucklehead (yep - that's how he acted) on the field. I first thought he might have some type of learning disability and just looked on with sympathy but after reading the board I'm assuming this is not the case. I can guarantee if he shows up on the sideline or field again next week, at Burton, someone from Burton will give up a 15 yd penality to ensure this knucklehead gets carried off the field.

He ran from his position on the sidelines jumping up and down with his arms extended, then stood facing the Kelly bench and bleachers, waving his arms and shouting, and it was very taunting in nature. I'm not a good guestimator of distance, but he was a lot closer than I'd have wanted to have been if I were behaving that way. Well yeah, it does

by Watching from the fence

when you're standing in front of the opponents bench doing it. While it might not have been his intention, it gave the appearance of "rubbing it in." Had the game gone the other way and a Wise player or fan behaved in such a fashion in front of the Clintwood bench I would have been livid. He should have limited his celebration to the Clintwood sidelines, and I'm pretty sure he realizes that now. Cheering and celebrating a hard-fought win is one thing; doing the "na-na-na boo-boo we beat you" dance in front of the loser is quite another.

They're quite similar

in technique -- it's all about location. One is done for the benefit of the winning team, on the winners side of the field. The other is done on the losers side in clear view of the losing bench and grandstand.

Seriously, I don't believe he was trying to rub it in, and no doubt was just caught up in the moment. He just picked an unfortunate spot to display his excitement. If a do-over was an option, I'd say he would take advantage of that option.

My only reason for getting involved in this whole thread was because a poster called another poster out for "spreading lies" about the incident and told them to get their facts straight when, obviously, the accusing poster did not see what happened in front of the Kelly sideline.

Embarrassment and realizing you have really messed up is bad enough to have to acknowledge to God," Oh My Goodness , like a whipped child, how that must hurt, but he would have to be so very humbled, God will forgive him, now we that are reading this and those that might have seen him. Be a bigger person and pray for him and forgive him and leave it there with Jesus at the foot of the cross.
Anyone who is not willing to forgive, needs our prayers also.

Ye without sin cast the first stone.

Then let's all use this as an example to contain our emotions appropriately and move on.
It's a sport for goodness sake, we fans need to go on and be good examples for our children who work so hard and make us all so proud. Anger but sin not like Jesus did in the temple that day.

He angered and broke things and threw things around, then he charged us to , Anger but sin not. So he knows we can lose control, at the same time he charges us to Anger but Sin not. Do not act upon your anger. May God bless you Mr. Rose. You know what is right and what is wrong. Remember God Loves you and so do his children.

99%?

by Wave82

one time or another?

I think not

it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel. i saw bad apples everywhere last night.

I'm proud that we had the stands packed, as we have for all this years games. we've traveled and had more folks in the stands than the opposing home teams. That's a great thing. Our team should be honored that folks are coming out. It gives me chillbumps to hear that crowd come to life.

I get anxious, I get mad, I get worried sometimes. That's what makes for an exciting event. I get embarrased when I see behavior as I did after the game, especially when it's Clintwood fans acting a fool.

I played for Coach Cummins, and I'll say he taught me one thing. I remember him saying.

"All the education you get from here on, won't compare to what you will learn out there on that football field." "You'll take away with you things you'll be able to use for the rest of your life."

He was right.

The second thing he taught me,

Win or lose: BE HUMBLE

He taught me good sportsmanship. Something I've noticed lacking in the last 10-15 years from the Green side. If you got an unsportsmanship call during a game, you might want to just clean out your locker and forget stepping back on the field as a Greenwave. Seems like we get one nearly every game now.

I spoke with several Wise fans last night after the game, and congradulated them on having a fine football. Some actually didn't know just how to take it either, it's as if they expected to be taunted. The expressions were sort of baffeling.

I wouldn't want to be in the chainholders shoes this morning. I know folks get emotional, but you've got to remember it's a game especially if you're an adult. It's a physical game, and being humble with either a W or L is showing pure Greenwave class.

As you know Joe and I does the announcing and realize why the school board is trying to stave off problems however the ACLU has stated that we can do a moment of silence which we do, instead of being silent when it is announced the entire crowd should all at once start reciting the Lord's Prayer, this would be very moving and spontaneous as well. All fans throughout the area should stand and not be silent. This idea is not of the school so as long as it is not promoted by the school and not inspired over the speakers it is acceptable. We have two weeks before our next home game so this could be accomplished.

This is what the ACLU does, and they've done it over and over again. Anyone who has ever taken them on on this issue has lost. I don't believe there is a single member of the school board or any county government official who agrees with the ACLU's position on this; unfortunately, as I said, our little county does not have the financial resources to fight it out with the ACLU in court.

RE: They Lose The Battle

I agree God knows each one's heart, as we bow our heads & silently pray, we can lift our hands towards Heaven , to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Remember Rock the City Dickenson County?

Yes as Christians we do have to obey the law's of the land. Now how edifying would that be to the Lord to know/see his believers lifting his name up in silent prayer with hands and arm's raised to acknowledge his Glory.

God can reach down farther than we can reach up. We can say our silent prayer and lift up his name, anyone who doesn't want to that's up to them. There fore Religious people can be Edifying to the Lord say their prayer between themselves and the Lord at the same time not offend any other person's around you.

People will be able to see, if they want that their are Prayers being said and Jesus Christ be edified even better than they might be able to hear us recite, THE LORDS PRAYER".

In the Bible Jesus says if ye be ashamed of me , I will be ashamed of you. I can't quote scriptures, anyone who can say or quote this from the BIBLE please feel free to do so for me. Thanks ahead of time for the ones who i know are out there and i know who can.

Anyone who is ashamed to raise their arms and hands and bow their heads to the Lord needs to move on up closer to the Lord anyway. Then, in an appropriate amount of time the announcers across the way can see when the hands go down and call for the National Anthem. Just an idea IMHO

We can still say our prayers and be edifying to Jesus Christ our Savior and obey the laws of the land at the same time.

not saying the prayer over the intercom is not being ashamed. it's actually being respectful to others that may believe differently. I'm all for a moment of silence.

you and your Lord is all that really matters. he really doesn't care about nations or counties or towns. he's in the soul business.
towns, counties and nations are just meaningless boundries created by man to seperate each other and hold claim to. they don't have an actual soul.
