Which part do you disbelieve, Ella? Note that he does not claim that the "winged cat" was capable of flying, or gliding, as are flying squirrels.
The end of the passage is more curious to me when he claims, "...according to naturalists, prolific hybrids have been produced by the union of the marten and domestic cat." As a long-time subscriber to Fur-Fish-Game Magazine, I've never read anything about such a hybrid critter. If this cross-breeding were possible I suspect FFG would publish the value of the furs in their monthly Fur Market Report, as well as publishing frequent articles instructing breeders as to how to obtain certain desirable colors in their "marten/cats." However, I don't claim Fur-Fish-Game Magazine is the end of the line for all North American naturalist knowledge...I can only ask that someone with more knowledge on the subject of cross-breeding animals, or who knows where to access the information, would chime in on the subject.
