They are the nearest thing left of the almost surely extinct ivorybills. Chester Moore has been doing extensive research in East Texas and Louisiana, believing that there could still be a "relict" population and that they're making a comeback. I hope he will make a discovery that will be his dream come true. At his last year's crypto conference in Conroe, Texas, he brought in an old log--in the flesh, LOL--with what he and his team believed could have been an ivorybill hole for a nest. Pileateds are occasionally mistake for ivories and people think they've had I-bill sightings. I hope Chester's right.
