A Donahue among the Oprahs: An Aging Tale

by (no login)

A Donahue among the Oprahs: An Aging Tale

I’m losing the battle again. The battle I wage with my sanity every day you ask? Hah. No, I’m talking about aging. You know- growing old. I’m sure you’ll think that I’m just being vain but I assure you that’s not the case. Actually it’s more like I’m a wimp or a whiner. Like an irritating complainer with nothing better to do or no better story to tell. Yes, it’s all that but it’s also much more. Sometimes it’s the little things that can really disturb you and I’ll tell you why. Let me tell you my story. I’ll start big and then work it down for you.
The big things never bothered me as I was aging. Sore muscles, poor night vision, being overweight, borderline high blood pressure and a receding hair line never bothered me much. Oh, and speaking of hair loss that brings up an interesting side note. The weird thing is, as the hair on my head recedes, the hair on my back is increasing. Maybe I’m de-evolving. Twenty years from now if you are taking an evening walk down the street and you see an overweight hairy creature come swinging down from a tree don’t run away. It’ll just be me. Don’t be disappointed if I appear not to recognize you as I limp past. Remember my night vision isn’t that hot. O.K. let’s get back on track. The wrinkles (very few – thank you) and high cholesterol don’t faze me. No, none of the big things are really that bad at my age (or really that big). Oh, I didn’t mention my age yet? Let’s just say I’m between 21 and 55. I’m not really that old.
Now let’s explore my theory about the little things being the most disturbing. The other day, as I was I taking my morning constitutional, I happened to glance down to a strange sight. It’s not what you’re thinking- all the plumbing is in working order and the pipes haven’t corroded yet. No, it was something else. There in the middle of a sea of glossy black pubic hair was one dull ragged white one. A Donahue among the Oprahs.
What the hell was it doing I wondered. Probably clinging on for dear life. As much as I wanted to believe that this was my first encounter with old whitey and his ilk I knew deep down that this wasn’t the case. Sure, I’d seen them before but I had never put much stock in them. In fact I think I must have blotted most of them from my memory as I am only just discussing it now. I remember briefly wondering how many had I missed? How many had hopped on the grundie train and dove off into the wash never to be seen again? Not many I had hoped but I can’t be sure even now.
Somehow the idea of my little albino friends slipping away in the dark and damp seems unceremonious. I would much rather think of them as graying veterans marching away from a parade or rally with a band blaring “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” This would be an honor much more fitting. It would certainly help to put my mind more at ease.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t believe that I have some underlying biological problem or disease. No, don’t be silly. The hair follicle is probably just burned out. No big deal. My concern is more with the metaphysical. What’s it all mean? If I was Shakespeare (you’re reading this so obviously you know I’m not – plus he’s dead) I would be describing this as a disturbing portent. It’s an ominous sign of things to come. Lucky for me I’m not Shakespeare so I won’t get into it. I don’t know what it all means. I don’t claim to. Never have. It may be as simple as saying it’s just one more thing to add to the list, albeit small. Just keep piling it on!

Realism.

by (Login JmK74)

Hi Jon,

I understand that you wish to have quite an impact on Cryonics, and I feel this is a noble goal. I have read several of your posts, and want to believe that you are not trying to scam people. You have been in the scene for a while now, and I respect that.

I will relay to you how I felt when I first started searching the Internet for Cryonics resources. It is my hope that you do not take offense. I wish to first post that I am not jumping on the wagon, and trying to put you down. You seem to have the same interest that I have in securing the future for yourself, as well as seeing that others will likewise benefit from Cryonics.

When I first started searching the web for information regarding Cryonics, I saw a post of yours regarding a son that wished to preserve his mother. The son had tried to secure a contract with other Cryonics facilities, however had failed. You had taken it upon yourself to try to preserve the life of the mother, for which I am grateful. You were not at all prepared, and had supplied hope to the already distraught son. While searching the Internet I also had seen several posts that where you had plagiarized, at first I had thought it may just be a lack of your understanding of English, however time and time again you have ignored other peoples request to place the original names of the authors, this ruins your name, and honor. I have also seen retaliation on your part, which was unethical. Also at times, you have brought up money as being the objective for yourself, again I will contribute this to you not being a native English speaker.

Now, is the time for me to explain why it may be a bad idea for you to start a facility of your own. I do apologize, like I had said earlier I believe you to have good intentions. The truth of the matter is, I do not believe you to have what it takes to start a Cryonics facility. It is in my sincere belief that if you were to ever secure the funds to purchase a dewar, that eventually the existence of the preserved human would cease to be, as they would thaw. You have shown a great deal in wanting to provide a service to people, however this is a far larger project than you can imagine. I believe many of the people on this forum, and on newsgroups would likewise never be able to sustain a project of this magnitude on their own.

You have tried to secure people to assist you, however the people you have secured for help live a great distance from you making this difficult, if not impossible. In addition, you have stated that you are to employ a person that is looked upon with great disdain from most Cryonicist. It may be best to assist in the Cryonics facilities that exist today instead of trying to secure your own business. To give your ideas on how Cryonics could improve, and to continue supplying information on your web site.

Let me again state, that it is my sincere belief that if you ever were to receive a patient that a life would be lost. Think about this.. These are not money making opportunities to secure a business in Cryonics. These are real people, that wish to live more than what has been provided to them. Cryonics businesses already exist, which are providing all that science has to provide. While most facilities do not have very much scientific evidence, you have not shown any scientific knowledge on how to preserve a human body until such a time that technology exists to revive them. In essence, you would be a murderer if you are to fail in your business. You have not the knowledge, nor do I, or most people on how to proceed for the best interest of the patients.

I am learning everday cryonics

by (Login Jonano)

Hi Anonymous.

I am in the field to learn, and people dont want to cryo preserve me, CI or Alcor dont want me in their team, they dont want to cryo preserve me, so I am obligated to start my own company if I want to be cryo preserve.

I am learning everyday and it becomes more simple everyday too to start a business in cryonics. I have all the contacts in place to setup a cryonics company. I only need a surgeon and M22 and it`s done. I know that`s it`s hard to setup a cryonics company but I think I can lead this field.

Refused membership.

by (no login)

Hi again Jon,

The reason why I post this, is I want to know why Alcor, and CI refused a membership to you. This is a concern. Please be specific as to the reasons they gave you. I understand that they may not want to be affiliated with you, however to deny a person Cryonics demands a good explanation.

Thanks!
Jeff

Brain Freeze -321° F (Saving “Reggie” Sanford)

by (Login Jonano)

Disciples of cryonics — freezing human remains in liquid nitrogen in hopes a scientific miracle is down the road that can “reanimate” a corpse as a healthy human being — do not suffer critics well. Just ask Arizona State Rep. Bob Stump.

He received threatening messages last year because he sponsored a bill that would have established state regulatory authority over Alcor Life Extension Foundation, the Scottsdale facility that is the cold graveyard of baseball immortal Ted Williams.

In Brain Freeze -321° F, author Jack Polidoro, a close friend of Ted’s daughter, employs “faction” — fiction based on fact — to convey what he and other scientific critics say is the absurdity of cryonics and that which others aver are the sins committed on one of America’s greatest sports performers after his death.

A living Ted Williams is skillfully woven into plots and subplots throughout the book.

His son, John Henry Williams (who also was frozen at Alcor after his death last year), had his father placed in cryonic suspension in 2002 after, some allege, he forged a note from Ted indicating his wish to be frozen. Bobby-Jo Ferrell, Ted’s disinherited daughter, fought to have her father removed from Alcor and cremated, but gave up when she could no longer afford an attorney.

With information and photographs from Larry Johnson (“Jonathan Bishop” in the book), a former Alcor official, Sports Illustrated reported a giant screw-up at Alcor led to Williams’s decapitation and subsequent multiple fractures of his skull.

Polidoro takes readers, unfamiliar and familiar with the Williams-Alcor case, through and beyond that real life saga, beginning with the freezing of a Negro League baseball icon named Reggie “Lefty” Sanford against his will at Mizaronics, a fictional cryonics facility near Falcon Field in Mesa. (Mizar, a star, parallels the astronomical origin of the star Alcor.)

With the help of Johnson, who has been in hiding since he left Alcor, and his medical background, Polidoro, who has a doctorate in animal science, lets the reader witness a beheaded Reggie Sanford.

Famed Houston scientist Richard Smalley dies/dead

by (Login Jonano)

Richard Errett Smalley, a gifted chemist who shared a Nobel Prize for the discovery of buckyballs, helped pioneer the field of nanotechnology and became Houston's most notable scientist, died this afternoon after a six-year struggle with cancer. He was 62.

Smalley possessed prodigious talent both within the lab, where he cobbled individual atoms together like tinker toys, and outside academia after he won science's greatest prize. In the decade since he became a Nobel laureate, Smalley pushed Rice University and Houston to the forefront of nanotechnology research.

Growth of Large Patterned Arrays Of Neurons on CCD Chips Using Plasma Deposition Methods

by (Login jonathandespres)
Forum Owner

Methods for growing patterned networks of large numbers of neurons are important to our understanding of how the brain works, as well as to the development of novel kinds of computer architecture that may parallel the organization of the brain. We have investigated the use of metal ion implantation using a vacuum arc ion source, and plasma deposition with a filtered vacuum arc system, as a means of forming regions of selective neuronal attachment on surfaces.
