I can tell you this, if you are setting up a community bulletin board for your website visitors, this software has both good and bad, like any other. The security is as good or bad as you make it.
If you set your forum up with the proper access controls, it is as secure as any other forum software. If you let anyone post, you will have SPAM and troll problems, just like anywhere else they leave the doors open with the keys in the ignition....
The good:
It's like owning a condo, or renting an apartment. When things break, you get the landlord to fix them. You don't have to go get dirty yourself.
The bad:
The landlord isn't always readily available exactly when you need them to be. Sometimes, you have to wait to get things fixed.
The good:
This takes up their server space, not yours.
The bad:
You have to pay for that if you don't want banners and popup ads.
The good:
You can have a bulletin board without knowing how to install it, maintain it, repair it etc...
The bad:
You have less control over the data than if you installed a bulletin board on your own server.
I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a bit, but you get the idea.....
