rangefinding is only affected by two optical factors, magnification and objective diameter. period. nothing else. it's a fact
either or both of those paramaters can give you shallower depth of field, which is the only thing that'll rangefind better.
a fixed scope has better optical quality than a zoom scope, all other factors being equal. that doesn't mean a walmart fixed is superior to a schmidt&bender variable.
