Response to Good points, here are two more:
my brother and I were shooting a hft hunter class match at DAFTC, and quite a few of the lanes were rather dimly lit since they were in a dense stand of small cedar trees. There was one particular lane where I literally COULDN'T make out the small killzone on the target and missed it twice. My brother on the other hand downed it twice and claimed that he could see the kz. Well.....I looked through his scope and indeed I could barely make out the kz enough that I could have aimed at it. The difference.......he was using a 40mm 5-15 Bushnell Elite 3200 AO scope turned down to 12x and I was using the old Japanese made 40mm 4-12 Bushnell Trophy AO at a straight 12x. It was obvious to me that the "3200 turned down to 12x" did give a bit of advantage over my Trophy under those conditions. I've always thought that the issue was only that the 5-15 Elite 3200 had better glass than the Trophy as you've mentioned, but perhaps the advantage my brother had with the Elite was that the better glass reduced down to 12x simply made for a clearer sight picture.
I'm assuming that the same "clarity advantage" currently exists between different level of scopes so what do we do.......require EVERYONE to use some low end brand with Chinese glass? Just a hypothetical question, however how anal do we need to be to provide "optical parity"? Do you think that if hft scopes limited to 16x, but still requiring a 12x max setting would have a PRACTICAL rangefinding advantage over a straight 12x?
Anywhoo.......you've made a couple points to ponder that I've never considered before. I really don't see a solution other than restricting max scope power! Then there is still the issue that some 12x scopes with nice Japanese glass will perform better than some 12x scopes with Chinese glass so where do we draw the line?
I still say, just leave the current rules stand or allow only scopes of 16x max or less without any restrictions.......do I make any sense at all?
