Well Mark Wulfekotte did his usual fine job of putting on the Deep Woods Match in Promised land SC.
The day started with the threat of rain and some drizzle, but cleared up to be just cloudy with wind picking up mid-morning. Mark set a tough course with a high Troyer rating, to help some of us going to the Cajun Classic in a week and a half from now.
Chris Cory, Don Armstrong and I stayed at the Days Inn Greenwood, like we usually do Friday night. Will Piatt and his lovey and talented wife Ginger, stayed at another motel nearby. After a breakfast at I Hop, Chris and I headed to the course. We arrived early and while waiting for Mark to arrive, we met Jerry Cupples. He the owner and supplier of the Pellet Gauge.
After Mark arrived, we all went in to park. I brought two Gong targets for sell and Jerry offered a trade for a Pellet Gauge. He brought several to sell. Bonus!
Soon the other competitors arrived, including Will and Ginger. I brought my new Karl Breaker Silent .25 bull pup for will to take and do his magic on.
We all went to the sight in range and after a few pellets down range my Steyr was on the money…Then I close the charging handle and the gun discharged without me near the trigger. This happened the first day at the nationals last year and it apparently was not fixed. Long story short, I was closing the lever easy and it still did it. My partner knew it was happing as I closed it with my left hand and my right up in the air like I was riding a bull in the rodeo… It cost me plenty of shots, but better there than in Baton Rouge!
I had lent my backup rifle to Joe Mags to use, so I just did what I could and pressed on…Just made 40 but only after it stopped being crazy.
I was partnered with Chip Hunnicut, formally the marketing manager for Crosman Corp. He now is the Dirctor of Marketing for Arcus Corp in Georgia. I made friends with him last year at the Crosman All American and through emails prior that, Really super guy. I enjoyed shooting with him. Although I think I cost him a few shots, talking with others behind him while he shot, I apologized and he said it didn’t bother him, but I think he was just being gracious....Sorry again Chip!
I mentioned I lent Joe Magarelli my backup rifle. His new HW100 He intended to use, arrived to him without the fill probe. The probe is on the way from overseas but he wanted to come to Marks Match.
I shoot open and click. My rifles are set up to click with all Eric Sanders side wheels and elevations knobs. Joe shoots hunter class. I offered to make a holdover chart by shooting every yard from 10 to 55 on my range. Well I did and shot the mildot holdovers to be sure they were on. They were. Joe arrived and had to immediately move the diopter to get the cross hairs from 2 down to 1..HAHA. Our eyes are obviously diff.
After he came off the sight in range,I iasked how did the gun do for him. He said in the flat range where it was zeroed, it was a laser. But especially the close mildots were off.. It was then I realized why. I range and shoot at 30 power…I did the holdovers at 30, forgetting he would be shooting at 12 power!. I told him to take a paper and pen and go do the ranges quick on the sight in range. It was too late, The shooters meeting was about to start…So poor Joe had anything in the zero range of 18 to around 31 yards would be shot using the cross hair center.. Other then that I don’t know how the hell he hit anything! Great job to Joe for getting any targets down …..!
The day was fun with some great scores.. Will Piatt came out on top with the top overall score, and in the open class scoring the 60.
Doug Vinson topping Ken Hughes this time around…… Well Ken was just coming off food poisoning soo……LOL Just kidding fine shooting Doug!
We all missed friend Rob Seiden who did not makeiti. Also Kevin Grimes Both from the Atlanta club.
From our club we missed Chris Berry and Ammon Piatt as they usually make this event. Also our club president Scott Allen who tried but could not be there…
The highlight for me was dropping my fox target I made for Mark at 55 yards. It is his largest target, as well as the heaviest out there. I liked his pterodactyl targets with the cutout wings. I like them so much that I will be designing my own to add to the inventory on my target website
What a great day,… with great folks, and great food, great shooting and memories galore! Thank you Mark for another wonderfull match!

Addendum... Thanks to Will and Ken I found the issue with my steyr and happy to announce it is fixed! Now it is all me......
