Scope question for FT Hunter classFebruary 3 2017 at 1:41 PM

I have a 15x magnification scope. It has a 10x setting and a 15x setting. No 12x setting, is the scope legal if its set on what would be 12x?

You'd have to set it to the first marked setting below 12x, which in this case would be 12x.

Sam if you want to use that scope it needs to be set at 10X

Thanks for the replies.

not to worry much

I have competed many times with 9X or 10X, and its NOT all that big a handicap so long as the scope gives very clear images, and ranges well from 10yds to around 20yds or so. Most 15X scopes do not range much bettter, at best extending reasonable extimates to around 24 yards, where it realy isnt so important, since its at or near the zero point anyhow.
10 vs 12 x

I aimed my 12 x scope out the window and focused on an object.
Then I tried it again at 10x.
I was surprised by how little the difference was.
The field of view was a little bigger at 10x. But not dramatically so.
The magnification and ability to see fine detail was a little better at 12x. But not dramatically so.
Suprisingly, the ability to range find with the AO was NOT noticeably better at 12x.
It was only a teeny tiny little bit better.
I could see the details at 10x well enough to see when the range snapped into and out of focus.
The details I was looking at to range find were just a itty bitty bit bigger at 12x.

I see WAY more differences from scope to scope set at 12X than similar testing between 10X and 12X.
I few yrs ago I was SO pleased with my 10X SWFA fixed power rear focus scope that I bought a new 12X version as soon as it was available. A disappointement, as the 12X example I received was NOT better than the 10X, and in fact ranged a little worse, prompting me to sell it (I have since learned I might have been able to re-set the objective lense to gain better clarity and ranging on that one, bit its too late).
Anyhow, if your scope is very clear, and has a good reticle, it should work decent even at 10X versus 12X.
Along those lines, I observed 24X scopes often outperfroming 32X or even 36x in FT, due to small, but inportant differences in clarity and focus abilities.

6 or 7 years ago we started pushing Hunter class as an entry level class till they decided to shoot a real big boys class. Now it is the dominant class at our matches. Five or six years from now freestyle may be dominant at local matches. At 72 now I may be grateful to still be in the game in 5 or 6 years though.
