Great Championship Match

September 10 2017, 10:49 PM

I just wanted to congratulate our winners and show some love and appreciation for our clubs leadership. it's because of what they do allows us the opportunity to join in and enjoy shooting these matches. I'm very proud to be a member of one of the best FT clubs in the country.

As mentioned above the weather couldn't have been any better and the competition more fierce. Match director Chris Corey did an excellent job of setting up a fair but yet challenging course for all. This wooded property is perfect for FT and has a little bit of everything. Very nice venue. It also takes a great deal of imagination and hard work to set up such a great course. Chris used his skills as a great shooter to make this match such a special event. His efforts are very much appreciated as we are so glad to have him as a THAGC member.

This was my first match where I stayed away from home. The idea was to avoid a long drive prior to the match would allow me to be fresh for the early morning match. My friend and skilled shooter Paul Porch didn't allow me any rest. Soon after checking in he started coaching me. We worked on my routine, which started with the bum bag, harness and ended up showing me how to use my new shooting jacket. We worked on all this until going out to dinner around 7;30. We met about 12 others at a near by stake house. We had a great time there and I got to see and a few friends and meet some new one from all over. What a great time we had.

You already know the outcome so won't touch on any of that, the meal that followed, or the nail biting shoot offs that ensued. But would like to mention another winner that didn't receive any mention at all this time. This person was me. Not because I had the most fun, shot my personal best but because I got to shoot with Mr. Will Piatt. He is for sure my shooting hero and friend. Not only is he our states open champion but based on his many other wins and achievements makes him one of the absolute best shooters in the world. Watching him go to work on breaking the course record was inspiring to me. The constructive criticism/feedback I received the moment the last shot was fired was priceless for a beginner. This list is to long to mention but I've already gone to work on it and know I will be better for it. So with all that I accomplished in just two short days makes me the big winner. If I wasn't hooked before I am now.

Thanks to all,
Raymond Hawkins

"with all that I accomplished in just two short days"

In 10 words Raymond summed up WHY I travel as far as I do to shoot FT.....

The "crucible of competition" tests us like nothing else, and to shoot with people whose skill set is a magnitude past mine is an education in and of itself

But just being at the match is a "master class" of airgunning education, and Ive not met an air gunner yet that wasn't wiling to help, educate, offer feedback, criticism, or just give good natured sh*t when you muff an easy one.

As LD says, its a gentlemen's game, and we advance the sport when we make the shooter better...
