.... is not a legend, but it is not that epic. Once, our sandblasting machine failed and to fix it I used a vacuum cleaner motor to fix it. This was to be a temporary repair, but as far as remember it is still in place working perfectly.
Another story from the same barrel, I also used a Alfa Romeo Air Filter as a oil strain on our Digital Control Machine Tool for gold chip recovering.
In the Manufacture Janvier, there is a special room called "la Caverne d'Ali Baba" (Ali Baba Treasure Cavern) where are stored various spare parts from various machines that could be useful ..... one day.
As our job is very special, we need specialized machines that we purposely built using "What can be found" element and "Do it Yourself" technology.
For the watch design, that is the same philosophy : once we have decided to implement a function within one mouvement, we have to design a dedicated complication. But most of the time we cannot use spare element from another complication and we have therefore to develop and to build it from zero and, believe me, it is no more "Do it yourself technology"
