mmm

it is true that the new rankings are a shambles, but it is untrue to say that it is not right to base the rankings on how far people get in tournaments, as this is the way the world rankings work.

I agree, I just think it'll take time for the system to adjust and in a few months we should see people where they should be, but the system is good. Its like the PSA, but we're not pro's, wel actually jon brown is full time, and he's lovin' it at Maccy D's.

Rankings

April 25 2006, 1:08 PM

I think the new ranking system is better for sure as we can now see where everyone is not just top 20.
Definately at the start there are some problems and people in wrong places but this will sort out as more results feed in.
Biggest problem will be with 2 things. Firstly players playing up an age group and getting far too many points.Even if they lose in the first round they will get more points than getting to late stages of own age group events. This should be banned !
If someone is obviously too good and wants to play up then they should be ranked in the older age group.

Other main problem will be that the big tournaments like Brtish open/closed/grand prix get so many points that if you can't get into them you can never get far in the rankings . Obviously they should carry more points but only a bit more not so much that losing in plate first round gives more points than semi's of a normal sanctioned event.

Overall though I think it's better !

how is it fair when the plate players get more points than players who get through to the 1st round proper

joke is not the word

I only know about the U15,s. How can they seed Nick thompson(33) Ben Lampon (35) Dan McGinn (45) Not many 1.2.3.4. seeds would want to meet these 3 in the 1st round

Of course that's not fair ! That is what I said !! I said it can't be right that getting beaten in the first round of the plate (in big events like the Open etc) gives more points than getting to the later stages of a normal sanctioned event .

May rankings

May 5 2006, 10:16 AM

These are now out on the England squash web-site.
Looks like some of the obvious mistakes are now sorted out.

Also out is an explanation of how the new system works and details of a new type of sanctioned event that carries more points than the ordinary "bronze events".

beat the system

May 7 2006, 6:02 PM

If you are 14yrs old and never hit a squash ball in your life but would like to impress your mates with a national U15 ranking this is how to do it.
Enter the following competitions.

BRITISH OPEN U15
BRITISH CLOSED U15
BRITISH OPEN U17
BRITISH CLOSED U17
any 4 other comps. at U17 with a main draw of 32 eg.
NOTTS JR OPEN 17
REDWOOD JR OPEN U17
SHEFFIELD JR OPEN U17
ABBEYDALE OPEN U17

If you finish last in all these tournaments you should still have enough points to get a national ranking of about 14 in the country at U15.
HOW CRAZY IS THAT.
This is because the british open and closed award far to many points.
If you are injured or sick on the British open days and only do the tournaments in your age group then you will never acheive your correct ranking position that year.
HOW FAIR IS THAT.

beating the system again

May 8 2006, 10:18 PM

If you dont fancy your 2nd round opponent best throw your first match as the plate seems to carry more points than players getting knocked out in the 1st round proper.
CRAZY I KNOW.

beating the system

May 9 2006, 4:44 PM

No it doesn't work like that !!
If you win 1 round you get more points than winning the plate !!!!
The calculations on how it all works are on the England Squash website now. Plate matches get a % of the difference between winning round 1 and losing.

For example in a bronze U13 event where you win through round 1 then lose in round 2 you would get 4 points.
Plate wins would give between 2 (first round losers get 2 ) and just under 4 but never more than 4.

So itis worth winning as many games as possible.
I think we should give the new rankings a chance

The new rankings are much more transparent. They have changed from April to May, which reflects the responsivness of ES to comments. Players should spend more time on improving their game than working out ways to maximise points.

beat the system

May 11 2006, 9:56 PM

if you win a pelimary match but lose the next match you get 2 points. The other player goes into the plate with a chance of getting more than 2 points

Ranking mistakes

June 5 2006, 5:01 PM

Yes June rankings are now out !!
England Squash seem to be pretty good at getting the monthly rankings out on time.

A few people are moaning about the mistakes in the lists....well if you see a mistake e-mail england squash and let them know ! I have done this a few times now and they are adjusted, if everyone does this then it won't take long for the errors to be sorted and the lists will become more accurate.
