This is meant for those who are searching for truth set forth in God’s word, and not based on the traditions of men and pagan religions.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy
son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within
thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and LORD rested the
seventh day: wherefore the blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
The Question is what day should a child of God keep holy? No one questions which day is the seventh day
or which is the first.
The only question is which day the Bible teaches to be kept. We must always remember to be watchful of
the traditions of man setting aside the truths of God’s written word. So what are the basic truths?
• The first day of the week is only mentioned six times in the Bible, and none of these are
commandments to observe the first day as anything.
• Jesus never taught that any other day should be kept; he did teach that the Sabbath was being kept
wrong, but never did he teach not to keep it.
• Jesus in fact left us with the example of keeping the seventh day Sabbath, and he is our example.
• Jesus also tells us he is Lord of the Sabbath. Luke 6:5 Mark 2:28. Do we really believe this was
for just a couple of years?
• Then those who followed Jesus teachings in the New Testament Church kept the Seventh Day.
Paul the Apostle to the gentiles kept the seventh day and preached to the gentiles on it.
Before we look at the scriptures to prove our opening statements let us look at some basics to build on to.
For example where did the Sabbath come from?
Gen. 2:2, 3
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from
all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work
which God created and made.
The above words are very important it says that God blessed and sanctified the seventh day. Can man
choose to change what God has done? Is the creation of this earth still not God’s work, and thereby his day
of rest still its memorial the seventh day?
The Sabbath was given to Israel before they received any Laws at mount Horeb recorded in Ex. 20. Israel
was taught about the Sabbath upon their deliverance from Egypt. In Ex. 16:5-25 we read how Israel was
taught to keep the Seventh day Sabbath and this as said earlier was before the law had been given, there for
the Sabbath was not part of any of the laws in the beginning. The Sabbath always becomes a question of the
law and as we have seen is really before the law. What we as children of God must do is lift up Jesus
Christ, and the only way we do this is to follow after his examples and not after the traditions of men.
We will now look at the points first brought up First day text because of space we will present the chapter
and verse and ask that you look them up. Please remember that any word that appears in italics has been
added in and we will look at all text in their most original format.
Mark 14:12 this has to do with the Passover.
Mark 14:12 This is to do with a period of time nothing to do with a holy day.
Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul
preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
This is one of the most used scriptures to try and prove that the NT church observed the first of the week.
First of all there is nothing here to even make one think that the day was now changed, but in fact with
proper study you will see that this is Saturday night which by Jewish time in the Bible would be the
beginning of the first of the week, and Paul preached to them till midnight because he was leaving the next
day. This would not be referred to as the first of the week if it had been Sunday night, as we all know a day
in Jewish time started at sundown so it had to be Saturday night after Sabbath. We will show you later that
Paul preached every Sabbath to Jew and Gentile, as was his "Paul’s" custom.
Math. 28:1 uses an italic word "day" which is an add-in word even so there is nothing here that lends this day to be a rest day.
Mark 16:1, 2, 9 are the same as above!
Luke 24:1; John 20:1 Again these are same as the above scriptures.
1 Cor.16:22 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered
him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
First of all this scripture has nothing to do with any declaration of the first day being holy. Upon a closer
look we see that the whole instruction is to save your offerings for Paul’s coming, a future event. This is
based on the term "in store" this was being set aside in store not a Sunday collection.
This was also a special collection for the poor. We have now looked at the first day text, and I believe that
it should be evident that based on these texts there is no grounds to keep the first day of the week as a day
of rest, replacing that day which God blessed and sanctified Saturday the seventh day.
We will now look at which day the New Testament disciples kept. Let me remind you of the text used
earlier Mark 2:28.
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath. It would seem rather pointless for Jesus to say he
was Lord of something that was about to be done away with. We must remember that Jesus is our example
if we do as Jesus did can we go wrong?
Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into
the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Now let us look at the disciple and apostles that followed after Jesus in the building and teaching of the
New Testament church.
Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out
of the scriptures
Acts 13:14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the
synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down.
Acts 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words
might be preached to them the next Sabbath.
Who does it say was out on the Sabbath day to hear the New Testament message "the Gentiles" what has
happened to us now we no longer honour the teaching of either Jesus the Christ or his disciples?
Acts 13:44 And the next Sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
What day did almost the whole city come out the seventh day Sabbath, and we know it is the seventh day
one only needs to read verse 45 the Jews would not have been upset if it had been Sunday.
Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out
of the scripture
This was not an odd occurrence, but for three Sabbath days he reasoned with his listeners Jews and Greeks.
Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
Acts 18:11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
Dear friends Paul preached to them for 18 months every Sabbath day I ask you what has the New
Testament example left us from the first disciples of our Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ.
Let us look at what James teaches us.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
So James speaks about the law, the law that the churches teach us have been done away with, and the law
that contains the instructions to keep the seventh day holy, because God rested on the seventh day and
blessed and hollowed it. How do we know that James is speaking about the Ten Commandments? Read
James 2:11.
James 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no
adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
We see that James is speaking about the Ten Commandments so if we break God’s Seventh day Sabbath to
keep man’s first day of the week, a day instituted by sun worshippers. Then filtered into the church over
time, would we not fall into what Jesus warns about in Math 15:9?
Matt. 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
After all whom’s doctrine is Sunday keeping, man’s or Jesus’? Mans! Who is our example man or Jesus?
Jesus!
The scriptural evidence we have seen is conclusive God first kept the seventh day Sabbath and kept it as an
example, he then gave it to his people Israel before the law was given at Mount Sinai, then his son Jesus the
Christ kept it, and declared himself to be Lord over the Sabbath, and finally we see that the New Testament
church kept it after Jesus ascension. Why do people believe that we God’s last day church should not continue to honour God and his creation by keeping the seventh day Sabbath that he blessed and sanctified?
Here are Biblical statements about the last day church.
Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the
faith of Jesus.
Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of
her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Here we have seen twice that God’s last day church is a commandment keeper! Then they must also be
seventh day Sabbath keepers if we believe the teaching of James, but we also have Jesus the Christ telling
us that no part of the law will cease till heaven and earth are replaced.
Math 5:17-19; 21,22
17 ¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the
law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be
called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called
great in the kingdom of heaven.
21 ¶ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall
be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the
judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever
shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
There is nothing to be said, but if you believe in the word of God then you must keep it all. The seventh day
Sabbath is taught throughout the entire Bible shouldn’t you keep it?
