as man....primates cannot reason or are not self aware, in simple terms they do not have intellect.... man's intellect is the result of the human 'spirit' which God gives each of us...and it is not a soul as you stated Phil...'nephesh' is used interchangingly in scripture to describe living things....man...sometimes other living beings as well. In scripture Nephesh is plainly used to describe phtsical life...not some immortal inner spirit thing. Just wanted to add a little to this topic. Hope you don't mind Phil?
