how quickly life changes

by grant day

It was 3am when Grant came home from work. He was tired, exhausted you could say. He walked into the apartment where he lived and felt no releif. The air was filled with pain and sadness, there was no hope in that place. He went to the bathroom to wash his face and looked in the mirror, not even recognizing the person he saw. He was so thin, tired, pale...So much had happened in a short time and he still hadn't processed it all.

Mark had been driving home one night in the rain and was hit by a drunk driver, killed instantly on impact. Grant came home from work that night to find Megan curled up on the couch in hysterics and Chester crying in the next room. Grant looked at Megan but first attended to Chester, changing his diaper and putting him back to bed. Once Chester had fallen asleep Grant had gone back to Megan who turned and clung to Grant, telling him what had happened between choking sobs. Grant did his best to console her as tears slipped from his own eyes, he too suffered a great loss with Mark's death. That night he and Megan found comfort in each other. They used each other to forget what was happening around them. That one night would change their lives in so many ways.

And now Grant stood looking in the mirror at his own bloodshot eyes. Days before Megan had approached him and told him that she was pregnant and that she knew for sure it was his. Grant had reacted with a blank stare, not sure what else to do. Megan left in tears and went to her room, locking herself in as she often did. Grant now wished he had done something differently. Now Megan rarely left her room. Grant had just taken up a second job to be able to pay for the apartment, and now this child was going to be born. He felt that they needed to do something, so he went to her room and knocked. He knew she was awake, he could hear her crying inside.

Megan told him the door was open and he walked in, looking at her laying there on her bed in a mess. He sat at the end of her bed, trying so hard to be calm though his hands were shaking. He told her that the best thing they could do was raise the children together and make the best of it for now. He promised her that he would take care of them all and she had nothing to worry about. All she could do was nod and then Grant left the room. Once the door shut he heard Megan get up and lock it.

The next few months were hell for Grant. Megan came out of her room even less than before. He was working two jobs and on his breaks he'd run home as fast as he could to check on baby Chester, feed him, change him, and make sure Megan was eatting something for the sake of the baby. Through all of it he had no time to stop and think about what was going on, he just did what he had to and kept his promises. Soon they had enough money so that Chester could go to daycare during the day because Megan was in no emotional state to take care of him without Grant. After even more hardwork and overtime hours Grant was able to afford to send Megan to therapy where she was able to talk through her problems and learn how to deal with life again.

Things were finally in order and Megan gave birth to a healthy little baby girl who they named Shanine.
