I can't remember life before her name

by Tobey Appleton

*Tobey sat on the beach past the boardwalk, watching the sunset over the ocean. Next to him was his acoustic guitar, the latest instrument he'd picked up. His hair was tousled and unkempt, as usual, and he still had the pale visage, but his eyes were different. sadder, a little more hollow. eyes you could lose yourself in.*

*He'd been away at music camp for most of the summer, a prestigious one up north in the mountains. He spent the whole summer playing as much music as he could have hoped, talking and laughing and dreaming with the other students who seemed so much like him. He didn't think anything would change when he came back. But things did change.*

"I think we need some time apart."

*It was Eden who said it, and he just stared at her like she was crazy as she went on nervously, explaining*

"You've got your music to concentrate on, and i really need to work on my surfing. It doesn't have to be anything permanent. i think we just need a break. It'll be for the best"

*He just stared at her, his eyes dazed and his smile forced*

"Yeah" he said softly, "maybe it's all for the best."

*But it wasn't. Tobey had become more withdrawn, having very few friends around the school. He spent more and more time alone, and he slowly began to realize that there wasn't a life without eden. at least not one worth living.*
