It is a very big concern of mine as a papa and husband. I agree with the view that it should be addressed by the community and not by women groups alone.
Rape is a societal problem. Women are not the problem but the victims. Womens groups are created to bring light to issues like this subject. They can't fix the problem, only the perpetrators of this violent act and the long arm of the law can "fix it". Discussions on topis like this is absolutely neccessary. It's a total mindset. Unfortunately the rapists don't view this act as violent. They are clueless to the devastation they cause. So in that regard, self respect and self worth needs to be taught to these young men who feel hopeless to in turn respect others particularly women.
There again, if these men feel and view themselves as worthless then that attitude mirrors on others. It's a dangerous situation to allow this cancer to grow. If your not familiar with the repercussions this "hopeless" way of thinking then take a look at Johannesburg, South Africqa's web site and read their newspapers and read their statistical facts. You think we've seen violence in PNG. It is NOTHING compared to South Africa!
Take care, I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.
