| what PNG needs from women...July 10 2000 at 2:49 AM | concerned |
| We all know there needs to be more women in leadership positions. The problem is migration... Alot of educated women end up leaving the country.
I know of some highly successful PNG women that have left the country. Our lawyers and businesswomen go down south etc...
Young women entering higher learning institutions need to be encouraged to study engineering mainly industrial and civil, political science and enviromental science.

Are they leaving the country because of lack of professional opportunities or because of the whole society's treatment towards women? |

The main reason they leave the country is the lack of professional opportunities available to them.Keep in mind too that the majority of woman don't receive the same pay as men.
Still though, the women that leave PNG have more money already or circumstances that allow them to leave, i.e. marriage to expats, relatives living in Australia already, refugee of Bougainville etc... The primary reason they leave is most probably because it's safer in Australia, their standard of living is better, financially they have some degree of security from the Aussie gov and because their children can receive better and in some case free education.
This sounds like a plan to a lot of women...
Let's face it, each year we are losing alot of women with talent, drive, education and good intentions because they refuse to accept the standard of working and living PNG currently offers them. |

You know, why don't we just encourage all women to be the best at what ever they are, maski lo supervisim nah directim go kam. If they want to study civil engineering larem, if they want to be a homemaker, larem, these are all valuable positions within society, paid or unpaid! As for us leaving, lets really take a good long look at that! PNG is not really the most ideal haven for women now is it! |

Good points! Yes PNG woman need all the encouragement they can get regardless of what their career pursuits might be. Still, if they want to be in a position to make decisions that affect them then they need to be in positions of leadships and devolpments.
Unfortunately, a homemaker is not going to make the streets of Lae or Moresby safer at night. Now someone in position of authority with influence however usually has a cirlce of associates in different departments that could quite possibly have a direct impact on the streets of society.
Yes, that's a long stretch tasol mipela igat planti ol lain olsem. Half 0f the ones that can do something sabe les lo wokim. Sad but tru.
As for PNG being an unsafe haven for women.... Couldn't be a more true statement!
The police really need to get them rascals out of the cities!!! They are an eyesore and take up space.

I AM GREATFUL THAT SOMEONE HAS IDENTIFIED OR REALISED SOME OF THE REASONS BEHIND THE DOWNFALL OF THIS SOCIETY....
IT IS TRUE THAT MOST OF OUR WORKING WOMEN HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY...AND YES WE HAVE ANNALYSED THAT IT IS BECAUSE OUR SOCIETY CANNOT PROVIDE FOR THEIR "WANTS"(ie money, better living standards,freedom...etc)...the only way to progress is not to give into what the society always thinks is justified!
YOU WONDER HOW THE BLACK AMERICANS BECAME PART OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY IN THE PAST AND HOW THE NZ WOMEN WERE ALLOWED TO VOTE....THINK it was because they persevered and fought for what was fair and right...now the only way in which png women can be heard and seen in this country is when we stop fighting for feminist actions and start getting in there and motivating the women of today...
anyway that is only a point of view..

If they were truly nationalist and really cared, my question is this: why would they leave? My second question is: why would we want them in PNG, considering the reasons why they left? |

Let me try to answer your question. First of all, just because a person says they're nationalistic does not mean that that person would die for their country or necessarily mean that they have more pride for their country than the next person.
If that were true and everybody felt nationalistic then I'm sure we would see a big movement in this country toward the betterment of PNG in general because saying one is nationaliistic to me means that you deeply care and are concerned with the past, present and future of our beautiful PNG. The reality is just because a person is nationalisitc does not make that person deserve more than the other.
We should let people who have no national pride stay beause we are not communists. Australians for example are always downing their government and country. PNGians are always downing their politicians, governments, schools, lack of aid and the list goes on. The ones that are quote "non nationalistis " are just regular people that are not easily satisified with what they see. They come off as complainers and critizers of everything. So what? Does that mean they don't have the right to live in PNG?
If we didn't have non nationalists, then all the "nationalists" would all agree and life would be great in a glass world, and all the pollies, and governments could never do anything wrong...
Yeh right. It's good to have a mixture of people who disagree.
Finally the reason they leave Niugini is because their needs are not being met and their desires are not being fulfilled. Now, when you can figure out why their needs and desires are not fulfilled in PNG and you can come up with solutions for this as well as an incentive to keep them here then run for government and be sure to let me know so I can vote for you or financially support your campaign.
It's sad but tru. PNG can't even fulfil her peoples needs, let alone desires.... I hope you are not let down. Nationalist pride is born in people and like everything else is subject to the enviroment and can unfortunately be extinguishable.
GOD BLESS YOU SWEETHEART AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!
