If you ask any of the respected breakbeat producers who they rate highly in the scene, no matter what particular tip they’re on, you can guarantee that one name would be right up there — B.L.I.M. (Boy Lost In Music), a producer, remixer and DJ based in East London. He started as a drum & bass artist releasing tunes on Emotif and SOUR before moving over to Botchit & Scarper when he caught the breaks bug a few years ago. His collaboration with former stable mate Freq Nasty produced some memorable remixes included Steve Reich’s ‘Desert Music’ and Metisse’s ‘Sousound’. As a recording artist on Botchit, B.L.I.M. produced the Detroit-esque ‘Chronologic’ which has become a breaks scene classic. His collaboration with Chris Carter and Shara Nelson,‘U’, was another ‘must have’ tune, neatly combining ‘Nu Skool’ sentiments with a vocal to die for. On his Botchit single ‘Metronydazol’, he collaborated with Meat Katie for, of all things, a 4/4 stomper, ‘Distorted Soul’, on Whole 9 Yards, illustrating the ever increasing influence of breaks on the entire dance scene.

You know to expect the only the raunchy best from Northern Virginia’s Syndicate crew. Their tag-team patio sets are traditionally one of the stand-out nights of the summer season. Expect outrageous behavior, boorish men, lewd women and of course excellent music, with styles ranging from house to drum ‘n’ bass to neo-electro to breaks to techno. On top of it all, it’s Sinestro’s birthday — longstanding ringleader of the Syndicate. Make sure to spank him silly. And from Luxx in NY it’s the DC debut of Linus, “The World’s ‘Worst’ Rapper.” Some things have to be heard to be believed...

Within the drum ‘n’ bass scene, DJ Bailey was Metalheadz’ best kept secret — but not any longer. This legendary drum ‘n’ bass DJ may not be famous because of his production credits, but he over-compensates for that fact with his above-par mixing skills. Ask any serious D&B fan about Bailey abilities, and they will read you his full credentials.

Tony Colman and Chris Goss, aka London Elektricity, are the restless producers of soulful drum and bass, and the odd bit of downtempo millennial funk. The founders and backbone of Hospital Records, they released their first electrical tune in 1996, while making random appearances under the monikers Future Homosapiens, Dwarf Electro, and Orkestra Galactica. They perform all over the world, playing both deep and funky drum and bass, and freestyle sets; they've turned out remixes for The Headhunters, Nitin Sawnhey, UFO, Aquasky and Bird, and released countless singles and one critically acclaimed album ‘Pull The Plug.’ In their spare time they compile the Plastic Surgery and Out Patients series, drum and bass and freestyle respectively, and take care of various runnings at Hospital HQ - from the contracts to the packaging design. 5" Taint is an established crew in the greater Washington, DC area. 5" Taint was founded by Jason Plank (nooch) and Timothy Hilke with a mindset that they would support most genres of Electronic Music (House, Techno, 2 Step, D'N'B, and UK Hard House are currently supported). 5" Taint held one of the most successful weekday weekly parties in the metro area last year and helped organize and present "United We Stand 2001" (along with 4Twenty4 and Stellar), a charity event whose proceeds went to the Red Cross to help the victims of the September 11th attack on America. On their plate this year they have two weeklies: one a Tuesday night party in Sterling, and the other, a Saturday night weekly named Stereo which begins Saturday, June 22nd.
