Wanna B dancers @ raves....

by rigg3d

heh.... well, I went to wut you guys call a rave over here this past weekend and let me tell u dat it was a disappointment. I mean, I didn't see one person that can actually dance. The circles dat you guys made and da people dancin in em were terrible. Not anything like I'm used to anyways. If theres some real B-Boys out there or some real poppers let me know wuts the spot were ya'll go to throw down. Oh yeah, da scene ova here is way different to the scene in Miami.... by far. The quality of music, dancers and the mood dat everyone is in is all different.

Hey the rave scene is all about enjoying yourself, rather than trying to see who can and can't dance. Thats why I like buzz, and you will have many more friends if you are open to let them be who they want to be and dance how they want to dance. I go to have fun, and I don't judge anyone else. Ain't that how its supposed to be? If miami is that judgemental, I won't hit the scene when I'm in that area.

Scenes

by Melissa K.

I have a question. People are always comparing rave scenes and discussing which ones they like and dislike and the vibes in different cities/areas. I have only partied at clubs in DC, Baltimore, and New York, so, I don't have a lot of reference. But, I'm curious to know a little about what people are talking about when they compare club/rave scenes. For example, I know this guy from San Francisco who says he doesn't like the East Coast because the parties are too shady compared to the ones in California. He says he prefers the Pittsburgh-Cleveland scene to ours. I have another friend who was told that when he went to school in Boston, he would love the scene up there. He ended up hating it, complaining that the clubs closed too early, and praising DC's scene as the best he's ever partied in (compared to NY, SF, Boston, Baltimore, and some others he's been to). Furthermore, some people are all about New York, while others say they charge too much to hear DJs you can hear in other cities for less and that the clubs are too pretentious. Then, some people say the scene in Orlando is hot, while others say heroin killed it and all of Florida is dead. Getting back to my friend who praised Pittsburgh-Cleveland, there are people from there who say that scene sucks compared to our own. And, of course, kids in DC are always complaining about what's here, while people up and down the East Coast come just to see Sting every week. So, what's going on? I hope that maybe some of y'all who have partied elsewhere could fill me in on what some of the other scenes are like, with comparison and contrast to DC. And, are some big scenes really THAT much better than others or do people just usually feel the urge to complain about their own town because they get sick of it and have a lot of fun when they, mabe, attend one or two parties elsewhere? What are the major differences in musical style, friendliness, open-mindedness, creativity, dress, etc. in the different cities? I really don't want a bash-praise analysis of any city. I just want a straightforward explanation of the differeces, using DC as a comparison simply because everyone knows this town so well. Ta.

Icey

by Melissa K.

dickweed/rigg3d,
I'm not posting this to bash Icey or anything, I just want an opinion from peeps who are into breaks. What is YOUR opinion of Icey live? I've seen him two or three times now and think he's another one of my top worst live big-name DJs. Every time I've heard him, he's been lame. Does he sound good to people who are into breakbeats? Do you have to have a special appreciaion for that genre? Or is he really just bad? Anyway, if you're looking for breaks in DC, rigg3d, you're not going to find many. Up here it's pretty much all trance and jungle with a smattering of underground house in the smaller clubs. Also, I'm just curious to know if Florida was the birthplace of breakbeat? Is that Florida's indigenous dance music, along with Miami Bass? Because everyone I meet or chat with from Florida sweats breaks, while not that many other people I know are all that excited by them.
And breaks have been popular in FL for what seems like Forever. I remember reading an article in some magazine about Firestone (Orlando) from quite a few years ago and it was saying breakbeats were popular. Just curious.

Breaks

by rigg3d

Well first,I've been listening to icey for a couple of years now, way before he got recognized and his musik was always good. He brought some really good and unique breaks, but the last three times I saw him perform in miammi it was a disapointment. He played the same sets over and over again. He has alot better songs than the bull**** he is playin now.

About the breaks in miami, well, Not everyone in miami likes breaks, Just a moderate croud. I was in a dance crew called Deadly on Acid and we wrecked **** when we did our show. I guess its a disappointment to me that breaks arent around much. lataz >:(

Trance?

by Melissa K.

SGB,
Okay. I'm confused again. Maybe I'm just not used to the way some people phrase things. Are you saying you're frustrated with all the trance DJs coming to Sting, so, Bad Boy Bill should be interesting because he's not trance? Or are you mistakenly thinking BBB is a trance DJ? Anyway, as for Keoki, I never heard Keoki spin until this year, so, I don't know how he was before. Apparently, once upon a time in a land far far away....he was a good DJ. All I can tell you is that he's one of the worst big-name DJs I've ever heard. I didn't believe he would be as bad as people were saying until I finally heard him when he came to Sting with the Moonshine Over America tour. He WAS as bad as they were saying and worse. Rumor has it, the badness is due to a number of factors, including his unwillingness to make progress in his music (i.e.: he's been spinning the same exact way his whole career) and a really bad drug problem. Some also say he has AIDS. But, I wouldn't take any of that as fact until I have some proof. But, regardless, he's bad.

yeah, well keoki's style was never really loved by the masses, it was just too hard i guess.
and hes allways had that drug problem, i work for moonshine and remember meeting him when he was on the tour, he was fuked up most of the time.. but bbb on the other hand is one of my fav djs, he not only incorporates all kinds of sounds into his nonstop mixes, but he finds the gaps to throw in some scratches and samples... although the dude has an attitude, i met him in miami during the wmc last year, he was really stuck up...
but he is good, altough we all made him famous...

Re: The Dick(weed)

by SGB

What are you talking about? Jungle and hard house have, to me at very least, a totally different feel. While both tend to have alot of energy, jungle is smoother to me. The rolling bass lines tend to blend the hard edges. The other issue is, and this is a personal matter, when I listen to jungle I want to listen to jungle. When I listen to house, I want to listen to garage/disco/deep house. Its called being cognizent of what you're listening to. I know you enjoy Trance, and to you its all Trance. Weather you're listening to ATB or Effil65 or PVD, you want it all.
I guess this all goes hand in hand with your theory that ravers are the ones showing them all how to dance! Go Rave stomp!

DJ Keoki

by

I don't think it's right to say whether Keoki's music is "whack" bc the fact that everyone has different styles. I have met people that do like his style. It's just that every dj has their own way with music. Keoki is infact very famous. I have one of his CDs and it's not all that bad. Just remember everyone has different tastes in dance music and he excells in his style. Not everyone has the same taste in music as u do and good music is not justified by wut you say.

Keoki

by Melissa K.

DJ Jin,
I don't think any of us are trying to say our opinions are the only that matter. Or that Keoki is bad because we don't like his style. There just seems to be a remarkable consensus among folks who have seen Keoki live that he is not a good performer. I know he is very famous and many people sweat him. When you see him perform at Sting, there will always be a crowd of gawkers hanging over the railing to get a glimpse of him while he spins. But, everyone I've ever talked to felt he was a sad live DJ. And, my opinion matches theirs now that I've seen him. To me, his set didn't flow right and, honestly, his music was hard on my ears-it sounded just like a bunch of noise, very un-smoothe. Truthfully, I've never heard Keoki on CD. He might be very good in the studio, but, I wouldn't know. But, just like with rock bands, there are good live DJs and good studio DJs and many times the two don't overlap. For example, I love Deep Dish on CD and heard that the old State of the Union/small club sets they used to do were great. But, I've heard them three times at Sting and felt they were flat and boring. Also, many of my friends didn't dig Tranceport II that much, but, couldn't stop talking about how great Dave Ralph was in November. Ta.

This Spring at Sting

by Melissa K.

All,
Try getting out to Sting on Friday the 21st. Donald Glaude, a really good DJ from Seattle, is spinning. He spun at the foam party and I enjoyed him. Also, Aphrodite will be there, too. He spins drum n bass/jungle, but, a lot of folks who aren't that into that particular genre (like me) still dig him. My main reason for posting, however, was not to talk about the 21st. It's to preview some of the DJs who will be at Sting in the next few months: Carl Cox, Doc Martin, Grooverider, Paul Oakenfold & Dave Ralph, Adam F, Bad Boy Bill, Keoki, Fabio, DJ Dan, Terry Mullan, Mrs. Wood, and Tall Paul, among many others. I highly reccomend Oakey & Ralph, DJ Dan, and Tall Paul, having seen them personally. I'm also excited about Bad Boy Bill, Adam F, and Carl Cox. But, skip Keoki. It would be the worst waste of your $12. Ta.

Warren y Dara

by Melissa K.

Dickweed,
I don't think anyone other than, probably, Scott Henry, John Tab, and Leiven knows when exactly Nick Warren is coming. He may or may not be coming within the next few months. His name was on the Sting flyers in December as "Coming in 2000". That means he could be coming in July for all we know. The message I got from DCRaves was who was coming in the rest of the Winter and early Spring. The Buzz crew is never specific this far in advance. They never advertise more than a month in advance, except on rare occasions, such as the big Moby/Aphrodite/Bad Boy Bill night. As for Dara, you probably already know he plays on the 28th of this month. And, again, Aphrodite and Donald Glaude will be here this week. Have fun.

The Same night?

by SGB

Moby/Aphrodite/Bad Boy Bill on the same night? Whoa, thats hard to imagine. Mobys set at Engage was pretty phat, I thought. We'll see about Aphrodite this weekend. BadBoyBill should be fun. I've been a fan for years but have not heard him spin.
I guess I feel kind of slighted that you didn't mention Dara sooner. For all you junglist out there, there is no one as Phat as Dara. It will definitely be a treat.

Moby/Aphrodite/BBB

by Melissa K.

SGB,
I was talking about the night in early October
when Moby/Aphrodite/and BBB all played- yes, in the SAME night- at Sting. It's not happening again. This already happened. I think you misunderstood.

AAAAhhh

Now it makes sense. Kind of. I was not calling into question the veracity of your statement. I was simply shocked at the unusual line up. Its a weird mix you have to admit.

Any Good Places??

by

Hey everyone. I went to Zei/Glow last Sat. and I liked the music and people were nice, but it was way too crowded. I like dancing with glowsticks, but there was no place to move around. Also, all most of the people did with the glowsticks was wave them in the air... I was wondering if there were any places that are less crowded and people actually know how to dance with glowsticks...

Thanks.

by octoman

Hey, just letting you all know about Nation's on Wednesday! It's been really fun for the last couple of weeks, the security is REALLY cool and dosen't hassle anyone. It's called Sugar it's at nation's from 10 till 4:30 or so, I'm not a promoter, just someone having a good time and the turn out there is good, but not great. It's only $10 bucks too. Some of you should check it out, trance all night. lots' of fun.
