Weekly Events

by Melissa K:-)

Mike,
If you're looking for weekly rave-type clubs in DC, I'm sure you already know about Sting (formerly Buzz): Scott Henry, John Tab, and Leiven's party. It's every Friday 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. at Nation (1/2 Street Southeast, near the Navy Yard). It's $9-$20 cover depending on the night and time you go. Normal cover (3/4 of the time) is $9 before 12 and $12 after. Heavy search at the door, including patdown, pocket picking, and confiscation of gum, candy, Vicks inhalers, potential weapons, drugs;-),stickers, and other banned items. Vibe is so-so most nights, horrible rarely, and incredible on occasion. Big-name DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Icey, Deep Dish, DJ Dan, Aphrodite, Bad Boy Bill, and Dieselboy are frequent visitors. Mostly trance, jungle, and progressive house. Returning soon to a Thursday near you should be "Contact", which was homeless after the closing of the legendary Tracks 2000 in November. It should be relocating to The Point, on 1/2 Street Southwest, at Buzzard's Point, on the waterfront. The vibe, I would expect should be pretty much the same as the old contact, minus the goths who shared it with the ravers at Tracks.
This is a much more laid back, intimate atmosphere than Sting, which attracts plenty of frat boys, Eurotrash, and trendies along with partykids. Wednesday nights at the Edge used to be a thing, but, I don't know if it is anymore. That was very intimate because only really hardcore partykids went there. Generally, it was pretty dead, though. I thought it sucked. The cover at both Edge and Contact is about $7. Both clubs run approximately 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. I don't know what night Urban Space is these days, but, I believe it's at Danko (Zei Alley, Downtown) now and specializes in Jungle and Drum and Bass. It's run by 2 Tuff I believe. Monthly, there is Natural Selection at DCLive, which specializes in House music and has featured The East Coast Boogiemen and others since its beginning in November. Sugar is a new Wednesday party at Nation. Word is the vibe is generally great (except for the Wu Tang night, when nobody went, I hear) and a lot of old-school ravers go. They've had Feelgood and Dave Trance spin, among many others. However, at $15, the cover is steep and ridiculous when you consider Sting is $12 and features world-famous names every week. Sundays at State of the Union is not a rave night, per se, but, you'll find a lot of partykids back in the jungle room, where Genesis spins not only jungle, but, some house, too. Genesis (Monica), herself, is a party kid, who goes to Sting and used to be a regular at Tracks. The house music in the front, spun by DC Legend, Sam Burns, is second to none in the city. Cover is $7. open until 2:30 or 3 a.m. Finally, Red, also, is not a rave club per se, but, attracts a smattering of party kids after hours. Excellent house music. Cover is free to $10 depending on how hip the doorman thinks you are. 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Of course, there are many other, smaller nights, but, I don't club during the week, generally, so, I haven't visited them. Ta.

try....

by BrahmaBull

Hey, Sting is great on fridays when they bring in big names like oakenfold, van dyke, ....etc. however, like Melissa says, some nights is shaky. Me personally, I mostly go about once a month when they have big djs. I don't care what some people say(i will get **** for saying this) but for awesome trance, try Glow/Zei on saturdays. I don't care about the stupid club, promotion or whatever...bottom line the dj, Pete, plays some of the best trance Ive heard. True this place gets no respect because its panorama and at zei, however, this place is so freakin crowded every week, everyone dancing to this guys ****. Even the snobs in the vip are going crazy. The dj plays trance for over 4 hours going past 4am. I love it and I recomend it...and to others, don't diss it till u try it, ask dj sammy, carlos and the other trance heads that post on this junk. PEACE!!!

Another to add to the list

by Disco

Aside from the places Melissa listed, there is also "The Spot" in Baltimore just past the inner harbor on Sunday nights and Thursdays. Sunday
they play down-tempo house in the front room and play more upbeat/leaning towards progressive house in the back room...Thursdays I think it leans more towards the rave scene. Sundays are 2 bucks to get in, only problem is it is 21 and up and it really varies drastically... one week it will be HOT and the next week it is dead, then its hot for a couple of weeks, then its not for a week or two...I don't know cover or age for the Thursday parties... look around for flyers for a place called Bang The Spot. If you are REALLY into house and don't mind a strong gay scene, you can check out Paradox in B-More on Saturday's... the music is deep, underground house with a real chicago warehouse type feel too it, although I personally don't dig the gospel stuff they are big on right now. Fever (I am assuming it is still going on) is also at Paradox the first Thursday of every month, and that is basically Buzz one night earlier. Exact same music, exact same crowd, ridiculously long and slow lines, and I think it is $10 or more to get in.... peace Disco
