Blinded by Truth

According to Socrates, one must look at the Sun through reflections, such as in water, or else one takes the chances of being blinded.

Would anyone like to explore or give an interpretation about why one cannot look directly at Truth, but must view it via reflections and images. Thus, perhaps also explaining Plato's affection for using myths and allegories.
