I believe if one where unbound from the cave then they would experience a new life. This new life would consist of enlightenment. At first one would be "perplexed." Then they would realize the knowledge they have gained from there enlightenment was worth the pain because if they never recieve the gift they would be unenlightened an in the "dark."
