Response to DH-89 downed by a Me 109 |
| Franek,
in addition to Matti´s brief answer I would like to point out that the downing of the civil registered DH 89 Dragon Rapide (OH-BLB, of Aero Oy) on a ambulance flight near Kiestinki 8 November 1941 (carrying wounded soldiers) was naturally a big scandal. Only due to skill of Air Captain Woldemar Laurila (one of Aero´s most experienced pilots) who was able to make a forced landing with 58 bullet holes in his aircraft, there were no casualties. Both the wounded R/T operator and Laurila were awarded Iron Crosses as a small compensation, and the Germans donated an Airspeed Envoy (ex-CSA OK-BAL, confiscated in occupied Czechoslovakia...) to the Finnish government (subsequently allocated to Finnish AF as EV-1).
The trigger-happy Oberst Carl Schumacher (newly appointed Jagdfliegerführer Norwegen) who claimed a "Soviet SB-bomber" (!) was transferred to the Mediterranean theatre and replaced by Lt. Felix Maria Brandis.
According to some rumours Schumacher had already scored 19 victories at the time, and thus needed one more to qualify for the Ritterkreuz. As he saw the Finnish ambulance biplane (!) he then shot down a Soviet SB!
