Recently I read in a book (Armchair Reader- World War II - Extraordinary Facts and Stories)that "During World War II the Finnish Air Force and the short-lived Latvian Air Force both painted swastika roundels on their aircraft. The fact that Finland ended up a German ally, and that thousands of Latvians joined the Waffen-SS, is coincidental, the swastika on their planes had nothing to do with Nazism."

If that is true, what did the swastika represent?
