There are certainly many pictures of the aeroplanes of American pilots in WW1
with a swastika painted in the fuselage. Also swedish pilot von Rosen used it in aeroplanes. This was a good luck symbol, thousand of years old, and in a similar way the Finnish Air Force adopted this good luck symbol, even as the national marking.
