Response to Tank killers

The information on who and how many may be very difficult to obtain, but the Soviet tank formations were bombed with every bomber type the Finns had, especially in the Summer of 1944. The only serious tank killer aircraft, though, that the Finns had was the Junkers Ju-88 dive bomber. According to the recently published Finnish book on Ju-88 the dive bombers attacked Soviet tank formations in 1944 at least on the following occasions,

12-13 June, 13 Ju's (Capt. Itavuori), Road Jappila-Kivennapa (Karelian Isthmus).
14 June, 11 Ju's (Capt. Itavuori), Kuuterselka (Karelian Isthmus).
15 June, 11 Ju's, Siiranmaki (Karelian Isthmus), at least one tank had a direct hit.
17 June, 8 Ju's, Kanneljarvi (Karelian Isthmus).
30 June, 12 Ju's (Lt. Iisalo), Road S of Portinhoikka crossing (Karelian Isthmus).
3 July, 10 Ju's, S of Lake Ihantalanjarvi (Karelian Isthmus).
5 & 6 July, ## Ju's, S of Lake Ihantalanjarvi(Karelian Isthmus).
8 July, 9 Ju's (Capt. Itavuori), Ayrapaa (Karelian Isthmus).
9 July, ## Ju's, Ayrapaa (Karelian Isthmus).
14 July, 8 Ju's (Lt. Iisalo), Lavajarvi (Aunus' Isthmus).

Because of the heavy enemy air superiority the results of the attacks were often very difficult to assess afterwards. The sightings were usually restricted to clouds of smoke, pillars of fire or explosions.

Pentti
