Teamtalk on McKenna

by Jeffrey S.

from today Saturday.

Xausa will be pleased with Livis win today, though St. Johnstone lost a one goal lead and fell 2-1 to Celtic.

McKenna brace seals Canada win

Kevin McKenna scored twice on Friday night to send Canada to 2-0 win over Haiti in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Miami.
McKenna was the star of the game for Canada as he scored on both sides of half-time and set the defending Gold Cup champions on top of Group D.

McKenna grabbed his first in the 28th minute when he skillfully headed a cross from Swiss-based winger Daniel Imhof into the top of Geteau Ferdinand's net. It was the second international goal of his career for the Calgary native who has tallied six times for Hearts this season.

In injury time, Canada almost had a second when St. Johnstone's Nick Dasovic fed McKenna on the wing, but his shot was touched over the bar by Ferdinand.

McKenna had to wait just three minutes after the interval to finally earn his second as he snuck behind the last defender and finished off a cross with his right foot from an equally unmarked Paul Stalteri.

The Maple Leafs take on Ecuador on Tuesday in their final first round game.

Canada are now almost assured of moving through to the quarterfinals of the tournament next weekend which means McKenna will not be able to make it back to Edinburgh in time for either clash with Celtic or Inverness Caledonian Thistle this week.

Final (R)

by Anonymous

Mexico 1 El Salvador 0

Excerpted from http://sports.yahoo.com/m/world/news/20020119/goldcup.html:

On Saturday afternoon, Mexico blanked El Salvador, 1-0, before an estimated 40,000 to kick off the West Coast phase of the tournament.

Mexico nabbed the winner in the 31st minute when Jair Garcia collected a muffed save by Santos Rivera.

Despite the low score, this one belonged to Mexico, which fielded essentially a "B" team. The Mexicans tested El Salvador early and often. Erick Espinosa, the man of the match, got things rolling when he beat Jaime Cubias on the right flank in the 11th minute and served a nice, curling ball into the Salvadoran box.

Rivera was forced to intercept, foiling a waiting Carlos Ochoa but setting the tone for the afternoon.

Espinoza, a 21-year old standout with Toluca, tormented Rivera for much of the first half with several probing strikes, including a sizzler in the 20th minute that skidded just wide right. In the 27t minute, he made a little flick-on header that Ochoa almost volleyed into the net.

Mexico finally was rewarded for its efforts when Rivera muffed a blast from Tomas Campos in the 31st minute, setting up Garcia's goal. Campos, taking service from Ochoa, teed up a scorcher that lined right to the lower left corner. Rivera just lost the ball after making the initial save, allowing the speedy Garcia to pounce and shoot it right over the hapless 'keeper.

Joaquin Reyes had a golden chance for an insurance goal stolen in the 59th when second-half substitute Guillermo Garcia cleared his shot off the line.

El Salvador lost battles at every position. Mexico dominated the midfield play with a five-man hexagon that effortlessly closed down the Salvadoran attack and continued to pressure the net.

While Josue Galdamez and MLS star Ronald Cerritos made nice individual efforts, they frequently lacked support. And Mexico made Rivera play every shot. Even on set pieces, such as a free kick from Ignacio Hierro in the 37th minute, the Salvadoran defense was ineffective. On that blast, Hierro simply went right through the wall, again forcing Rivera to do work.

Tensions flared a bit in the 85th minute, when Rivera unintentionally stepped on sub Adolfo Bautista.

On Friday night in Miami, Costa Rica shut down Martinique, 2-0, and Canada defeated Haiti by the same score.

Mexico coach Aguirre on the game

by Jeffrey S.

First off said that he would use the tournament to decide if any of the new players would merit going to the WC, but that 90 minutes wasn't enough to decide yet.

Mexico seems to respect Guatemala quite a bit and are not claiming first spot in their group yet. Even the El Salvador comments (from their players) indicated that they were fairly pleased with their show.

Rupert Metcalf's Jason Bent story from Miami

by matthew

Rupert filed this for the paper in Plymouth and posted it to the Voyageurs to Miami list. Hope he doesn't mind me posting it here.

From Rupert Metcalf in Miami

Jason Bent turned down the chance to win his 27th cap for Canada last
night
as his country opened their defence of the Gold Cup here in Miami
last night.
The Plymouth Argyle midfielder, who travelled across the Atlantic last
weekend nursing a hamstring injury, decided not to risk worsening the
problem
as Canada beat Haiti 2-0 in front of a crowd of over 14,000 in the
Orange
Bowl.
Holger Osieck, the Canadian coach, had wanted to pick Bent in the
centre of
his team’s midfield, but the Ontario-born player felt that he
was not
fit enough to turn out. He hopes to play a part in Canada’s
second game
in the tournament, which is held every two years and features the
best sides
in Fifa’s Concacaf region plus two guest nations.
Canada play Ecuador at the same venue on Tuesday night. Their victory
yesterday means that they are virtually guaranteed a place in the
quarter-finals next Saturday.
Bent said: “It’s the same injury I had when I left
England. I
didn’t really want to take any chances. I trained Wednesday and
I
trained Thursday. The coach wanted me to play, and I would have
started the
game, but I just decided that I didn’t want to risk it.
“The team doctors have been working on me all week.” Bent
added.
“Maybe in a couple more days it might get better. But it’s
taken a while and I haven’t really seen a whole lot of
improvement.”
Paul Sturrock, the Pilgrims’ manager, had not been totally
happy about
Bent travelling to this tournament when less than fully fit, but he
will
presumably be content that the player for whom the club went to a
great deal
of trouble to secure a work permit earlier this season is in no mood
to risk
aggravating his injury, and thus jeopardise his chances of playing a
full
part in Plymouth’s promotion push.
“I could have played today,” Bent admitted. “It was
a tough
call, but I didn’t want to make it worse.” His place in
the heart
of the Canadian midfield was taken by Richard Hastings of Ross
County, who
was one of six British-based players in the starting line-up.
The others were Jason De Vos of Wigan Athletic, Nick Dasovic of St
Johnstone,
Davide Xausa of Livingston, Jim Brennan of Nottingham Forest and Kevin
McKenna of Hearts.
It was McKenna, normally a defender but used by Osieck as a centre-
forward,
who scored both of Canada’s goals against Haiti. He opened the
scoring
with a fine header in the 27th minute and added another with a close-
range
shot four minutes after the interval.
Canada, who were unexpected winners of the Gold Cup in 2000, are
without
their top scorer two years ago: Carlo Corazzin, the former Argyle
player. The
Oldham Athletic striker had a hernia operation last month.

In the first round they have only 4 games

by DJT

And of course two of them are done. The others:

Tuesday (7 EST, 4 PST): T&T vs. Martinique

Wednesday (midnight EST, 9 PST): Cuba vs. South Korea

I think the confusion lies in the fact that in the first round Fox Sports World (USA) has everything except the USA games, while Fox Sports World Canada has only the four games I mentioned. I think that the first round games not on in Canada are all on tape-delay (sometimes days) in the USA, so it appears that for some reason the Canadian network decided not to take games that they wouldn't get live.

Both networks will have everything after the first round.

Hirshfield Write-Up

by Mimglow

I found this on internetsoccer.com

Canada keeper faces uncertain future

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Andy Morris
19 January 2002 (Teamtalk) -- Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld had the most rewarding outing of his international career on Friday, but is still unclear where his club future lies.

Hirschfeld was largely untroubled as he kept a clean sheet as Canada beat Haiti 2-0 in the opening defence of their CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament in Miami.

The 23-year-old has the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular starting spot in Holger Osieck's team, especially given injuries to competitors like Craig Forrest, Pat Onstad and Mike Franks.

He started his international career with half a shutout, coming on as substitute for Forrest in the 2-0 friendly win over Bermuda in January 2000, but did not get another chance until Canada took on Malta last November.

That result, a 2-1 defeat, was a disappointment for the whole team, but things were back on track against Haiti.

For the Edmonton native, however, question marks surround his club future after a trip to Europe failed to secure a contract.

Hirschfeld flew to Edinburgh to train with Scottish Premier League side Hearts in December, but missed out on the chance of a deal. It means that, as things stand, his next competitive club game will be for the Calgary Storm in the A-League in April.

Hirschfeld was the Storm's Player of the Year in 2001, helping them win the Western Division of the PDL and reach the championship final where they lost out 3-1 to the Westchester Flames.

The Storm hold the keeper's registration, and their spokesman Tommy Wheeldon said it had been a case of bad timing for Hirschfeld at Hearts.

"Their main goalkeeper, Antti Niemi, broke a finger just after Lars came back to Canada," he explained. Instead of asking Hirschfeld to fly back across the Atlantic, Hearts turned to their unsettled reserve keeper Roddy McKenzie.

Wheeldon said: "Lars was tremendous for us last season, and if he went it would be a mega loss to us. But we're about developing young players.

"The main feature of our organization is getting players to the highest level we can.

"The (Hearts) deal's still not dead, they're very interested in him. There's other clubs in the offing too.

"(English Third Division) Plymouth Argyle could be a possibility, so we're hoping that after the Gold Cup he'll be going back to Europe."

Hirschfeld is keen to return to Europe, where he enjoyed success with German side Energie Cottbus in 1999-2000.

His coach at Calgary, Thomas Niendorf, rates him highly and set up a deal in 2001 that allowed him to join the A-League's Vancouver Whitecaps as soon as the PDL season was done.

"I believe he is the successor to Craig Forrest," Niendorf told the Calgary Sun. "Pat Onstad is good but right now no 'keeper in Canada has more potential than Lars."

Hirschfeld and McKenna

by ray

Great result for Canada. Should have been 3 - 0, though. Oh, well.

I think that was Lars' first official cap at any level, wasn't it? He isn't hurting his chances of being picked up by a European team.

And those two strikes from Kevin McKenna were full of class. The first would have been good in any league in the world. Probably one of Canada's best goals in a long time. I hope some English Premiership or 1st division sides are watching.

I hope we seen DeGuzman and more of Rogers and DeRosario in the next match.

Canada showed big improvement over '99 Haiti match

by Dave Carmichael

I seem to remember that Haiti was a lot more dangerous at times in the Canadian 18 yard box during the last match Canada and Haiti played in Gold Cup qualifying back in the fall of 1999.

Canada did a better job of shutting them down and passing the ball around more accurately except for still a few too many long range pass giveaways when they could have kept the ball on the ground.

Canadian Player Ratings for Haiti match-

by Dave Carmichael

Hirschfeld--covered angles well, solid save on 1 break to earn shoutout,2-3 hurried clearances that a stronger team could have punished--8 2ND STAR

Fletcher--shut down Haitian forwards most of match without too much trouble, had one chance to take ball on break into Haitian half but hesitated too much and held himself up instead of going for it, seemed to tire a bit towards end of game--7

Menezes-solid in middle of defense, anticipated Haitian forward's moves well, steadying influence with good short passes, and ball control when under pressure--8
THIRD STAR

deVos--solid, crunching presence in defense, still sprays too many long pases though--7

Imhof-strong down wing, taking on opponents, set up first goal with nice cross from right side, subbed out after tiring some in 2nd half after lots of hard running on right side.--7.5 HONOURABLE MENTION

Dasovic-one more typical Dasovic match of quietly shutting down oppostion attacks with hard tackles at the right time--7

Stalteri-another decent match from Stalteri-setting up forwards and putting pressure on Haitian midfield and defenders-still needs his shooting boots though, set up McKenna's 2nd goal with well placed, steady pass from the left side-7.5

Hastings-wasn't too sure about Hastings being included but he was steady enough as defensive midfielder although he seemed to disappear at times--6.5

Brennan-good game on the left for Brennan-running at defenders and tracking back to stop Haitian counters-7.5

Xausa-had quite a few decent chances early in the first half-let shot rip just wide, his timing was off slightly-seemed like he was struggling a bit to get himself in decent scoring positions-did put the ball in the net from ball pased back to him by McKenna but it was called back for non-existent off side 7

McKenna-he scored two goals, took them well, one from a headed cross from Imhof, the other on a steady passs from Stalteri which he tucked nicely past the keeper.
He still not the fastest player as aforward but he gets himself into dangerous scoring positions and could have had 1-2 more if he was a bit quicker off the mark. 8.5
MAN-OF-THE-MATCH

Subs: Mark Rogers for Imhof, DeRosario for Xausa, Pozniak for (was it Hastings, or Fletcher-can't remeber). None of them were on long enough to contribute much--no rating

PS-I give Osieck 7.5 for Cda playing as a team

by Dave Carmichael

with solid discipline on the field and also for not exiling any more players for shooting a ball near him during practice or for wearing a baseball cap to team suppers.

As much as I don't like his tendency to fly off the handle, he is and always has been an improvement on Lenarduzzi as national team coach.

The negative side to Oseick: Canada has played some stinkers under him-ie-4-nil to T& T, a 3-nil loss to Egypt, 2-1 loss to Malta, a tough 3-nil loss to Japan, and crashing out of World Cup qualifying early, some baffling lineup choices and a steady steram of exilings under Osieck

The psoitives: Canada has improved their overall style of play, making steady short passes, defending more as a team, getting forward more effectively against stronger teams instead of being constantly pinned in their own end the whole match with a sclerotic defense and midfleld lumping it up the field at every opportunity as they did under Lenarduzzi.

He did guide Canada to the last Gold Cup and he is working hard to youth player development across the country-these are all positives in his favour.

My biggest concern about Osieck is that he will keep turning players off the national team and waste all his hard work at player development.

If things get to the point where players lose all respect for Osieck and they will no longer play for him-he will still have to go in spite of the positive improvements he has added overall to Canadian soccer separate from the men's national team.

Bottomline, I would still rather see a coach with better man-management skills who would continue what Osieck is doing for youth player development.
Regardless of what I think, Osieck will be Canada coach until 2006 if he and the CSA so wish. I just hope he learns to ease up a bit on his flying off the handle tirades-it's not professional.

In Holger's defense

by s.j

World cup qualifying and gold cup games should not be used to try unknown players.
to try potential national team players you need to arrange friendlies
Unfortunately the very few that was arranged for the last 2 yrs had to be used to fine tune the A squad for upcoming major tournaments where survival was a must.
there was no time for experimentation or goofing around.
the CSA must give Holger and other coaches more opportunities to work with potential national team players in games where the score line is not as important as player and squad development.
cuba, bermuda, panama, grenada are teams that can be used to initialy evaluate players and team cohesion after the gold cup is over.

so far the CSA has neglected that aspect of the program and they deserve a next to zero rating in that department
as far as i know it is improper and lack of respect to wear any kind of hat when you are eating.
May be because it was cap with a baseball team logo instead of a soccer team logo that what Holger was not too happy about
but overall the program is in better shape now
not too many coaches could have done better with what he had to work with and the endless shortcomings of the CSA regime is enough to drive anybody that cares about the betterness of Candian soccer insane.
Credit to Holger for sticking around where lots would have given up like James for example.

Totally agree about CSA endless shortcomings...

by Dave Carmichael

driving anybody that cares about the betterment of Canadian soccer insane.

The CSA really dodged a bullet back last summer when they poorly promoted la Francophonie soccer tournament and one of Francophonie games organizers blew the whistle on the poor preparations for the U20 team especially after they lost badly to Gabon of all places.

This was all came to the attention of the press and Denis Coderre and the merde almost hit the fan for the CSA but the U20s saved their skins by getting out of the first round.

More or less agree...

by Gordon

...although I would give Dasovic an 8 as I thought he was very effective in his role and a steadying influence on the whole defence. I also think that Hirschfeld, although he kept a clean sheet and made an excellent save at 0-0, did butcher a couple of kicks and may have earned another half point deduction.

Actually, on the save I thought he was reacting a bit late off the line but one can't quibble with the result. He certainly played competently, aside from two kicks.

the games were definitely in the right order...

by London Ont soccer fan

...for Lars Hirschfeld assuming Holger Osieck picks him again for the second game and that might be a bit of a question mark after those clearances. The Haiti game where he wasn't under too much pressure has hopefully helped to settle his nerves in time for the much bigger test against Ecuador on Tuesday. I assume he doesn't normally do stuff like that when he is playing for the Storm? Having a keeper that the defence is confident playing the ball back to will be increasingly important the further the team progresses in the tournament.

What is the knock against Pat Onstad these days? He isn't all that old in goalkeeping terms and is still playing at a reasonably high level for Rochester after the dissapointment at Dundee United. Goalkeepers can usually play at a high level until they are almost 40. Or how about Jim Larkin or Brian Bowes who are playing indoors for Cleveland and Kansas City in MISL right now?

The three Voyageurs at the top of the show were me, Marc P and the fellow from Sask whose name I can't think of. The footage is 1½ year old, dating back to May 27th 2000's game vs T&T at Varsity.

I'm sending the question, "what games were the two refs yesterday watching?" in for next week.

My question

by Stu

..."From which League do the teams that get promoted to the English "Conference" come from"
He didn't really answer my question, saying that one team gets promoted from the Conference to Div.3, and one team from Div.3 gets dropped to the Conference.
I have since found out however that each winner of the Uni-Bond, Rhymans, and Dr.Martens Leagues get promoted to the Conference, and the bottom three teams from the conference get demoted to one of these three leagues each!!

And those teams for 2001 were...

by

From my News Of The World Football Annual 2001-2002:

Barnet was relegated from the 3rd Division, replaced by 2000-2001 National Conference winners Rushden & Diamonds.

Dropping from the National Conference were Kettering Town, Kingstonian, and Hednesford Town for finishing 20th to 22nd.

Kettering and Hednesford both drop to Dr Martens League and Kingstonian to the Ryman's League.

Promoted are Margate from Dr Martens, Farnborough Town from Ryman, and Stalybridge Celtic from Unibond League.

(I suppose the uneven balance for relegation is for geographic/travelling cost considerations).

The one about the European leagues running over the winter was answered by "this year, the games have to be over by late May because of the World Cup". But why are these leagues played in the winter in the first place?

A few things

by nb

First of all, I was more than a little disappointed to find that the Free Press did not include anything about the game. Not even the score. The least they could have done is picked up on the CP wire. But they did have Glenn Cheater's weekly ditherings about Spanish and English soccer.

Also, I seem to recall a tradition of people who had seen national team matches given individual player ratings. Given the nature of this match and the difficulty of seeing it, I would be much interested in what you analysts have to say.

CSA Release

On the game... Seem to have their substitution records missed up. At least I think so.

Canada Defeats Haiti 2-0 At Gold Cup
Canada's Men's World Cup Team earned a 2-0 victory over Haiti in their opening game at the 2002 Gold Cup at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Thursday.

Kevin McKenna, playing at striker for the first time in his international career, scored both goals to move Canada close to a berth in the quarter-finals.

A loss or draw by Haiti against Ecuador on Sunday would put Canada into the quarter-finals on January 26 regardless of their result against Ecuador on January 22.

The Canadians opened the scoring in the 28th minute when McKenna converted an excellent cross by Daniel Imhof with a clinical header. McKenna doubled Canada's lead in the 49th minute when he drove home a cross by Paul Stalteri.

Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld earned his second shutout for Canada in only his third appearance. He made a fine diving save to keep the game scoreless midway through the first half and preserved the shutout in the dying minutes with a fine deflection.

January 18, 2002 - Orange Bowl, Miami, USA
CONCACAF Gold Cup
Canada 2
Haiti 0
Canada: Lars Hirschfeld, Tony Menezes, Jason deVos, Carl Fletcher, Daniel Imhof, Paul Stalteri, Nick Dasovic, Richard Hastings, Jim Brennan, Davide Xausa (Chris Pozniak, 90), Kevin McKenna (Mark Rogers, 65)

Feeling Foolish...

by Gordon

As the game started and I saw Stalteri listed at defence and McKenna a forwards, I figured they just got switched by the TV graphics guy. As the game progressed and I saw McKenna playing up front (with Stalteri in the Midfield) I told my son that I didn't like that choice as I thought McKenna had proven himself as a potentially world class defender and didn't like seeing him play out of positon... who knew!

I still am not sure that I like it but I can't argue with the result. The third goal was created by McKenna who pressured the keeper into a mistake and, while he probably should have taken the goal himself, he did lay it off nicely to Xausa and it should have counted. He also held up a few balls nicely to let his teamates get up into attack. It was also clear, however that his instinct for the position still needs to develop...he stood flat footed off the Stalteri deflection and may have poached one had he gone to net as an experienced striker would. His fitness level may not be up to snuff just yet either as there were a few opportunities for him to pressure defenders in possession of the ball close by. Quibbling, you bet...with more developed instincts (2 on 1 pass attempt to Xausa was a bad idea - not the third goal but one latter in the second half) he could have had 4 or 5 and that is very positive...I think I may be talking myself into liking the idea

Two further things...

1) when was the last time a Canadian scored a brace in an international match? and

2) when is that Malta score gonna be replaced?

Got both against Costa Rica and two against Haiti in Gold Cup Qualifying. I think he's the last to score twice in a game.

I'm also 99 per cent sure Alex Bunbury is the last to score three - against Barbados (or was it Bahamas?) in the first round of World Cup qualifying at Swanguard in 92.

cheers,

It is kind of amazing to see the size of the Sat.Sun versus the Toronto Star.Must be a pound or two in difference in weight in favour of the Star.

Football Confederation: Surprise Move Propels Canada

by Winnipeg Fury

Surprise move propels Canada to 2:0 win against Haiti

19.01.02 - Defending Gold Cup champion Canada didn’t have two key veterans available, saw a surprising tactical shift made in their lineup, and were facing an Orange Bowl crowd thronged with fans cheering on rival Haiti.

Yet the Maple Leafs saw two goals come from defender-turned-striker Kevin McKenna to post a 2:0 victory to open defense of their Confederation title – the first two-goal game for Canada in more than a year.

McKenna, a rugged defender with Heart of Midlothian FC in Scotland, was moved to the forward line by technical director Holger Osieck and responded with his second and third career international goals in winning just his eighth cap.

Injuries deprived Osieck of both Carlo Corazzin, the winner of the Golden Boot in the 2000 Gold Cup, and Tomasz Radzinski, who plays for Everton FC in England. But it didn’t take long for Osieck’s surprising replacement to pay off, when in the 28th minute McKenna rose to meet a floated cross from Daniel Imhof on the right and neatly flicked a header past Haiti ‘keeper Geteau Ferdinand.

McKenna struck again just after the break, when he tapped a pinpoint cross from Paul Stalteri for Canada’s second. It was the first time Canada had hit the back of the net twice in a match since a 2:0 win against Honduras in May 2000.

Spurred on by a vociferous crowd, Haiti began to grow in confidence as the match started, forcing a fine save from Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld at one point – until McKenna’s goal quieted the house. But Canada eventually began to win the day with their size and strength, overcoming the speed of the Haitian side.

Haiti now faces a tougher challenge in Ecuador on Sunday, needing to win to have any chance of reaching the quarterfinals.

THEY SAID IT

Canada technical director Holger Osieck:
"It was great to get off to a good start, and we achieved that. There's a lot of talent on the Haiti team. Technically, they're very good. They're not an easy team to beat."

"With today's result, I think we'll make the quarterfinals. But from there, it's going to get difficult, so I'd rather not predict anything."

Haiti technical director Jorge Castelli:
"It was a victory for physical soccer. Tactical soccer was a loser. With that football they won the Gold Cup and they started winning (again) today. It's very good for them. My compliments."

the above comments by the Haitian coach make me sick.

by s.j

The canadians played as a team
The players has more of a refined technique compared to the haitians and they did the simple things well.
Haiti played more of an individual game the players has some raw talent at best
the quality of their passes were nowhere near the ones of the canadians.
The Canadian victory was a victory for quality soccer in all aspect of the game period.
How pleasant it was for me to see that they kept the pass short and on the ground and players moving into empty space.
previous squad has played more of a kick and run game.
it is nice to see that they tried for most of the game to move the ball from the back instead of booting it upfront.
they control the game as a team and was quite elegant in the process.
tactical and technically they were the neater team to watch
This game was a very good tune-up for the game against Ecuador.
with 3 days of training under Holger before the next game this team is on the right track
give him time and support, don't forget Holger's heroes are undefeated so far in gold cup competition.
slowly but surely Canadian teams are playing a different brand of soccer under Holger.
I am very optimist that the more time Holger get to spent with this team during the tournament we will see less of the kick and run game we were acustom to with Canadian teams of the past.
it was effective football
a typical German team performance.

His comment:"Tactical soccer was a loser" is lame

by Dave Carmichael

as if Haiti are graet proponents of tactical soccer.

Haiti had a weak defense, unrelaible goalie, and farted around with the ball too much. Some of their players have decent ball skills, but once they got near the 18 yard box, Canada usually shut them down quite handily.

Most of Haiti's shots were from long range except for two breaks on the left side of Canada's goal that Hirschfield covered effectively. So much for "tactical soccer"

He's Argentine, so

by Jeffrey S.

he has the tactics in his head. Of course that doesn't mean his team does.

This is the typical view that folks in "Latin" countries like Spain have of northern (English, Norweigan) football, but it is also what they most fear, physical intensity, pace.

Since Ecuador will be more tired than us we'll have to come out very hard on Tuesday and work for that first goal. I have a funny feeling about that game...

London Free Press: Overseas Eye-Opener for Young Squad

by Winnipeg Fury

An overseas eye-opener for a young soccer squad

By MORRIS DALLA COSTA -- London Free Press

The goal was simple enough. Take as many talented soccer players as possible, insert them in an intensive, competitive level of training and games in England and see what happens.
What happened proved that London is capable of producing some top-notch young players who, with proper training and immersion in the culture of soccer, might one day make it big.
Before Christmas, 16 local players of various ages from London Soccer Academy headed to Grimsby as part of a working relationship the Academy has with the First Division soccer side.
Ian Knight, Grimsby's director of youth development who has been to London several times, oversaw the 16 players overseas. He was impressed enough to take note of seven of the group. Knight will continue to monitor their progress. He hopes the seven will return to England at a later date.
Seven is a surprising number. Before the trip, organizers were hoping two or three of the players would turn heads overseas. They were also hoping the trip would impress the players with the level of dedication and commitment needed to succeed.
 Mission accomplished.
Michael Pereira was considered the "baby" of the group, which travelled to Grimsby. He turned out to be one of the most successful.
Pereira, who turns 13 in March, is the player to whom the overseas trip will prove most beneficial. He's young, talented and has an enormous capacity to learn.
He also attended training session with the under-14 provincial team and has been asked to continue to train with it, quite an accomplishment for a 12-year-old.
For Pereira, who will play this summer with North London, the trip was an eye-opener.
"It was unbelievable, a really positive experience," he says. "It overexceeded my expectations. The training was unbelievable.
"We were well fed. We all got to stay together, so it was really good atmosphere. It was really intense. There was no goofing around, especially with the kids from England. They show up every day, ready to play soccer. It's quite the thing to see."
The others who impressed Knight include Arnold Kostkowski, David Kwiek. Fidel Villaneuva, Anthony Vassallo, Brian Yanful and Ryan Mendoca.
It's pretty much a given that in the younger ages Canadian kids are as good as anyone. But many lack the intricate knowledge of the game, which comes from living it on a daily basis and having the game pervade every corner of one's life.
That's why the trip proved beneficial in more ways than just what was learned on the soccer pitch.
"I think, physically, we're ahead of them in strength," said Pereira. "Mentally, they are way ahead. I bet we can play with most teams there at 12 or 13, but when you get to 15 and 16, you don't have much of a chance because they play soccer every day.
"At a of the practices, one of the defenders said, 'Michael, take two steps to the left.' I took two steps to the left and the ball landed right on my feet. They anticipate well."
Yanful, who is 16, sees that development of players in the older age group.
"The level is pretty high," he said. "It's more intense than over here. But it was a great experience. There were a lot of training techniques we can use here."
Pereira wants to play professionally. That's a sentiment spoken by many would-be professionals, but when they are thrown into the madhouse that is professional soccer in Europe, that goal seems unattainable.
The trip to Grimsby taught Pereira how hard he has to work to attain that goal.
"You have to show up every day, have to perform every practice and every game," he said.
He was one of eight players selected to play with the Grimsby youth team in some of the games. He called it the "most memorable part of the trip."
 And he wants more.
"Just watching them, I can improve myself. They work so hard. When they go to school, they have a soccer ball at their feet. They are so smart with the game.
"I'd do it again without a doubt. I'm sort of missing it now. I'm working really hard because I want to go back."
And that's what the trip was all about.

happiness (for a day at least)?

Could it be? For the first day in a long time, all is good in the world of Canadian soccer. I haven't read every post up on the board yet, but I've yet to see any negativity out there. Nobody even complained about the lack of spoilers

The lads deserve full credit for the victory. Sometimes when they face a weak opponent they don't put them away like they should, but tonight they did the job.

Does Holger go with the same lineup next game? I'd say yes except maybe get Bent in there if he's healthy.

Gold Cup makes the CBC Web page, finally

by DJT

Canada takes first game in Gold Cup
WebPosted Fri Jan 18 23:54:23 2002

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Dogged by questions about its ability to defend its Gold Cup soccer title, Canada let its actions speak on the field Friday, dominating Haiti in a 2-0 opening-game win to open the tournament.

Canada faces Ecuador on Tuesday in another round-robin game, but the win over the Haitian side will probably be enough to advance the Canadians into the quarter-finals.

Team Canada coach Holger Osieck had every reason to be worried as Canada headed into the tourney in Miami, Florida. While Canada was a surprising winner in the Gold Cup last year, it looked undermanned and unable to repeat the performance.

Instead of having star netminder Craig Forrest, who basically won the tournament for Team Canada last year, Osieck was forced to settle for an inexperienced 23-year-old in goal who played one level below A-League last year.

Add in the absence of injured or retired players Marc Bircham, Carlo Corazzin, Craig Forrest, Garret Kusch, Pat Onstad, Paul Peschisolido, Tomasz Radzinski and Mark Watson, and it looked like Team Canada would be in tough against some of the weaker opposition in the Gold Cup, including Haiti.

Maybe it was pure determination or adrenaline, but Canada outplayed the Haitian squad and received two goals from Kevin McKenna to open the Gold Cup in surprising style.

The win was Canada’s first since a 1-0 victory over Iran in April 2001, snapping a four-game winless stretch.

Haiti is ranked No. 82 in the world, 10 places above Canada, but it was the Canadian side that dominated the match with some crisp, controlled passes and disciplined play.

The game was played before a vocal pro-Haitian side of 14,805 at a vacuous Orange Bowl.

With Osieck struggling to find a full roster, he sprung a small surprise on the Haitian team by starting McKenna up front with Davide Xausa.

The gamble paid off in the 28th minute when McKenna met a cross from Daniel Imhof on the right side of the field and headed the ball past goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand.

The young McKenna, who turns 22 on Monday, performed the same feat 21 minutes later, tapping in a nice cross from Stalteri.

McKenna now has three goals in eight appearances for Canada, a team that has been hungry for some semblance of an offence of late.

Canada had been shut out 10 times in 16 matches after the 2000 Gold Cup.

The Gold Cup serves as the championship of CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. The competition features 10 CONCACAF countries and guest teams from Ecuador and South Korea. The field is split into four groups of three, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the quarter-finals.

To be fair, we were more like 6-8

by Daniel

There was Jason and his friend, Christian and I and the two guys at our left. And I think there might have been a couple more as opposed to the 20-25 strong Haitian contingent.

But usually Haitians can become fans of local soccer and don't usually look down on Canadian soccer. I think I even got one to join the Ultras.

I say blame it on the Canadians that didn't show up more than on the few Haitians that did.

by loyola

Merci

Some record

by Dennis

Spent a very enjoyable evening at Gretzky's,between a bunch of great and some very young voyageurs.Sitting next to Bill Spiers, I could not help but observe that I was the oldest the tallest and the biggest of the lot of around 40.Some record.
Don't think this place is set up for watching any game. The stool became a weapon and it was very difficult to feet your face.
Also felt out of place seeing all these great Canadian scarves and shirts, next time guys.
Could't help but see some of the other customers give us a bit of a funny look, when they saw we were watching a soccer game. The cheering was superb guys and the game, well what a game,we really very smartly controlled the ball and the boys played a very intelligent game, with Tony and Hirsh doing a superb job keeping the nerves and the confidence under control. Some goals and some result.
Are we going back to this place or are there any suggestions.

Hey, Dennis

by Luis Rancagua

What I don't like about Gretzki's is that it is a predominately Hockey hang-out. Just because you watch soccer, they suddenly think your gay or that you are from another planet. The average guy that attends this bar does not know anything about soccer. The other time I was there both myself and my twin brother we got into a scrap with these hockey mother f.ucking ****s who tolds us that: "soccer sucks." They even called us faggots. We did not deserve this kind of treatment from these *******s. Eventually we (and our buddies) kicked there f.ucking heads. believe me, it's not my kind of place. Let's try a much better place that tends to be soccer oriented.

I think you should attempt to watch the game in a place where many sports are watched. Just so outsiders see what it means to be a soccer fan. This is how the rest becomes aware of a soccer presence. Maybe for that reason, Gretzky's wasn't too bad?
Next thing you know you are on the Bullard show and then what?

The Storm show every sign that they'll send more players to the national side. The bottom line is the more clubs we have playing at the highest possible level whether it's the A-League or CUSL or whatever, the more opportunities we'll create. I doubt Lars would be playing as well as he is without the playing time he received last year with Calgary.

Lars has signed a contract with Calgary Storm. However, the club is trying to move him to Europe where he really wants and needs to go now. One can only hope he will go on loan to a European club after the Gold Cup and be back for Calgary's A-League season before completing a final transfer.

All in all, not a busy night for Lars but a confidence builder all the same. He did make a terrific save when it really counted with score 0-0. I have said it before and will say it again...Lars will be around the national team for a long, long, time!!!

Game report direct from Miami

by Gian-luca, Free Kick, Grasshopper, Frank (FC Havoc

As I sit and type this the Haitian team is in the hotel lobby behind me, coming in direct from the Orange Bowl and their 2-0 loss to Canada. Lets get one thing clear - we were sitting in the stands (in the midst of 10 to 15,000 Haitians) and I can tell you there is no way in hell that 3rd goal was offside.

But enough complaining! What a great game for Canada, and what a great experience. The crowd was hostile at first, but nobody threatened us explicitly, though I (Gian-luca) was implicitly forced to hand over my Gold Cup programme to a Haitian fan who had demanded it from me. As our team was up 2-0 with 5 minutes to go, I agreed to the request. Free Kick has been sandwiched between two Haitians in the stands, while Frank describes the environment like a rock concert / BYOB party. Grasshopper lost his voice, while Mike D. nearly fainted. I don't know what the exact attendance of the game was, but I can tell you there were exactly 10 Canadian fans in the stands. The Voyageurs here made up 6 of them, we got to more Canadians who live in Florida to sit with us and we ran into 2 more after the game.

We felt great because the players did acknoledge us before, during and after the game. We chatted to a few as they were waiting for the bus. Word from Rupert Metcalf, Plymouth journalist, is that Bent pulled himself out of the starting line-up for fear of aggravating an injury.

Did anybody catch us on the tv? How was the commentary. Free Kick was interviewed for Haitian radio about the Canadian team. The Haitian fans were impressed with our team, and even the spanish fans. People here are linking De Rosario with the Taliban for his post-MLS championship comments after he scored.

The facility itself was great for watching soccer. Perfect sightlines. We also saw the Costa Rica match held before, and the first goal was offside. They deserved to win the game and were clearly better than Martinique, but they got calls that went their way. Martinique had no finish ability - Haiti looked stronger in this regard.

The atmosphere was great, especially during the playing of the national anthems. As I type this the Haitian team has just gone to their rooms.

And now a few words from Frank FC Havoc : where the hell are the rest of the Voyageurs? We have a duty to live up to our name! You all have a chance to make amends by coming down to Miami for the Quarter-finals next weekend. The weather here is great, you'll love it. We are! Wish you were down here with us. We hope to go to the players hotel tomorrow and see their practice.

Free Kick & Grasshopper wish to point out the impressive local scenery which is in abundance here.

Its been a long happy day, we're tired, having got up at 3:30am and we haven't had much sleep, but we will wake up happy. What a great way to start your title defense!

GO CANADA GO!!!!

almost live report from the Drum & Monkey

by Ed

All I can say is:
Where the heck was Julian??
I had my jersey on and was PUMPED.
"Jack" and I were there early and were somewhat apprehensive about the promised spectacle but at 6:55pm MST the big screen was lowered and there we were!!
With Michael Vandale, Tommy Wheelan and a good assortment of Storm fans in attendance, some big cheers for Alberta lad Lars Hirschfeld on his crucial save midway through the first half. And then Whoooooooooo!! Kevin McKenna. Perfect header.
Anyway, needless to say lots of cheering for Kevin's second and general astonishment all round for the offside call on the 3rd apparent goal.
Let's kick some Ecuadoran ass next Tuesday.
And let's get Julian on the field!!!
Great result despite my misgivings with Holger's starting eleven and tactics (once again). Oh well, can't deny a sweet victory (first time we've scored two - or was it three? - goals in some time).

So were we on TV or what???

by Mike D (in Florida)

I realize that you guys back in Canada must have been cheering as much as we were when Canada scored, but did anybody notice if we were on TV? I'd hate for the people watching on FSW to have thought that there were no Canadians there, particularly since we were the only ones making any noise in the second half...

Re: the Haitian fans. Most of them were quite good natured but, as always, there were a few bad apples. We joked around with some of the Costa Ricans during their match against Martinique but I don't think they'll be quite as friendly if we're playing against them in the quarterfinal. If they turn out to be Canada's opponent in the quarterfinal, I'm going to get to the stadium early so I can make sure I'm sitting close to some security guards or cops for protection...

GO CANADA GO!!!!

2. Watching Canada win with a bunch of fans around really freakin' rocks also. (Glenn and I both noted that we'd never had the experience of being one of many fans before... it's a good thing to be sure.)

I'm up for next Tuesday if anyone else is willing to get together--some were suggesting the Duke of Gloucester, and I think Wayne treated us really well... although at $6/pint they really oughta treat us well!

I said McKenna would score& Haiti won't handle him

by Dave Carmichael

I was half right, McKenna scored 2.
Most importantly, Canada won without too much difficulty and I'm really happy to see that. Full credit to the players and Holger Osieck.

The way things have been going lately, I was really concerned that Canada might come out flat again and pull off a real stinker. Thankfully they didn't, and that's good because Canada is a much better team than Haiti despite the goofy FIFA rankings.

One down, one more to go. The real test will be against Ecuador.

Ecuador

by Reza

I am hoping that Canada can pull of an upset and win against Ecuador. That way they will most likely face T&T, which is weaker than CR IMHO.

Ecuador has a pretty much full team without Delgado. Back in Edmonton'99, they looked beatable, but with the kind of results they have been getting, they must have improved a lot.

It's interesting looking at draw, because this is the first tme, the organizers have not planned for a USA-Mexico final.

You're correct about USA/Mexico

by Tyler

Though I haven't looked at the schedule for the quarters and the semis, I assume that the States and Mexico will meet each other in either of these rounds. You have to figure that if you're Inter/Forever, you don't care when the two sides cross. Having it in the final is risky, seeing that everything must go exactly to plan for a Mexico v US final. This way less has to go right to achieve the "big game." My guess is that they meet in the semis.

Canada v. Haiti - Encouragement and Concerns

by Ian Kennett

I am ecstatic that we won the match 2-0, but while there were some positives, there was also some cause for concern.
Positives
-Lars Hirschfeld played one heck of a game. He looked settled, confident, and composed. If he plays like this again, he should get a look from some European clubs.

-Paul Stalteri was the best man on the pitch today - easily. He defended well, he held up the ball, controlled the pace, changed the direction of attack, and he seems to have lost that bothersome tendency to complain so much. Great game by Paul!

-When the team kept the ball on the grass, they maintained possession for much longer periods of time, and looked good doing it. This must be the focus of the team - possession, patience and a ground game as the basis (not always) of the attack.

-Carl Fletcher played a solid game at the back.

-Tony Menezes controlled the back well and played the ball quite effectively.

Concerns

-There were altogether far too many long balls out of the back, and far more often than not they amounted to nothing more than easy give-aways. Once in awhile is OK, but the long ball strategy is almost an insult now to our players because we have more skill to hold the ball and attack on the ground.

-Ineffective substitution timing did not give a player like de Rosario enough time to settle into the game. I thought that de Rosario should have come in at around the 70 minute mark, and not when there are just 9 minutes plus stoppage remaining. Holger needs to give his planned subs sufficient time to "get into the game" and that means more than 10 minutes.

- Set plays like corners were so often wasted. Surely they can get a corner kick hit low and hard and into the vicinity of a target. With Devos and McKenna lurking, corners cannot be wasted.

So, bring on Ecuador, and because of tonight, I will sleep a little easier!

Go, Canada, Go!
Ian

Not as bad as Panama . . .

by matthew

In Panama, two guys approached the ball at the same time and one touched it and the other stopped and by time they sprung into action Watson had charged it down. I think that was worse than ours. What frustrated me about ours was that Dasovic was unmarked on the right touchline. No one was going to leave the wall to mark him. Put it into space at the edge of the box and let him have a go, we tried to make the same pass, but cuter, to one of the two guys that bumped into each other. Keep it simple...

oh well. I hope they work on it in training.

cheers,
matthew

Trick Play

by David Bailey

The collision was obviously on purpose. Unfortunately, the third man botched up and gave the ball away.

Reminded me of a play I saw from England where they had the two men standing over the ball start arguing and pushing each other regarding who would take the kick only to have a third man run in and fire the ball home past the distracted and confused defenders.

what got me was that the Haitians had left...

by London Ont. soccer fan

...Imhof(I think?) wide open on the right wing at the edge of the box as they had way too many guys in their wall given the distance and angle from the goal but instead of passing it out to him the three players over the ball insisted on trying the trick move. It took them so long to get it going it was obvious they had something like that planned so the Haitians maybe didn't respond to the move the way they had anticipated.

Yeh BABY

Just got back from the pub and was happy with the result. It's nice to see our strikers in the right place at the right time out heading the oppositions defence. Not a bad result as the lads have only played for five days together.

I saw so many potential give and go's which I hope Canada starts to take advantage of as the tournament goes on.

Go Canada Go.

XAUSA ROBBED

by Offsider

I assume the referee called an offside when he had his hand up to indicate an indirect free kick. The two takes of the camera unfortunately don't show whether the assistant put his flag up or not. What it does show however, is that he was ball watching not alined with the second last defender. In any event, Xausa was behind the ball when it was passed to him after the goalkeeper failed to control it. When you are behind the ball, you are never offside, regardless of how many defenders are between you and the goal line. Xausa and Canada were robbed of a legitimate goal. Anybody disagree?

Exactly

"When you are behind the ball, you are never offside, regardless of how many defenders are between you and the goal line."

It really seems like they forgot this rule. The idiot commentator was trying to figure out whether Xausa was lined up with the last defender, totally ignoring where the ball was. It's as if the refs did the same thing.

I don't think there's any question at all that it was goal.

It had to be Hastings that was offside...

by London Ont. soccer fan

...on the shot but he wasn't interfering with play so there is no way it should have been disallowed unlike the Costa Rican guy who should have been called offside the moment the ball bounced back off the post. Two abysmal refereeing decisions IMO.

I think it is time people gave Holger Osieck some credit. The team tonight played at a level that was well beyond what we used to see in the Lenarduzzi era. The hissy fit in the game against the college team does not appear to have done any harm. Lots of good overlapping runs and passing in the midfield although I thought they opted for long balls aimed at Hastings and Xausa too often in the first half particularly instead of trying to keep it on the deck with short passes. The big difference from the Confederations Cup is that Xausa, Hastings and de Rosario look a lot more dangerous up front than players like Corazzin and Kusch did even allowing for the fact Haiti are not exactly world beaters.

Only major problem is Hirschfeld IMO who looks shaky in goal particularly with the ball at his feet but we knew that in advance and Fletcher is a weak link defensively but there again he's probably about the best available. If a team later on has a good left winger we could be screwed. Jazic is a left back isn't he so he wouldn't have beed the answer to that? Aguiar? Too bad he isn't in Miami but Dasovic does a good job as the ball winner in midfield so not having him is probably not as huge a factor as not having Radzinski.

Saw the play

by nb

Sportsline -- Global's nightly sports highlights show in Winnipeg -- had a tidy little report on the game. I got to see the goals, and I must say McKenna's header was quite nifty. Also saw a Hirschfeld miscue, and then a nice stop, both from the first half.

The second goal was also a nice piece of work. However, the phantom offside was ridiculous. There are 16-yr olds reffing kids games that would get the play right. Even the anchor, who I doubt knew much about soccer, scoffed a bit at the call.

Sounds like a nice effort from Canada. It will be interesting to see what they will do against real competition.

I'm beginning to get worried for deRosario. McKenna certainly didn't play himself out of the lineup, and I don't see deRosario starting for Xausa. Perhaps Holger will use his subs more wisely and bring in the fresh legs a little bit sooner.

In any case, a job well done.

Neil Davidson: Canada Opens Gold Cup with Win over Haiti

by Winnipeg Fury

Canada opens Gold Cup with win over Haiti

MIAMI (CP ) -- Two goals by Kevin McKenna helped Canada open defence of the Gold Cup soccer title in surprising style Friday night with a convincing 2-0 win over an outmatched Haiti.
Canada faces a far tougher foe in Ecuador on Tuesday in another round-robin game, but the win over Haiti should be enough to propel the Canadians into the quarter-finals.
For that reason, head coach Holger Osieck had called Friday's game his team's "final." As the Canadians proved in 2000, anything can happen once a team gets into the knockout rounds of this tournament.
The win was Canada's first since a 1-0 victory over Iran in April 2001, snapping an 0-3-1 stretch.
Haiti is ranked No. 82 in the world, 10 places above Canada. But it was Canada who looked the better side, playing a crisp, controlled game that belied the makeshift nature of Osieck's injury-riddled squad.
The contest was played before a vocal pro-Haitian crowd of 14,805 at the cavernous Orange Bowl with almost all sitting in the lower bowl on one side. The crowd gasped at every Haiti move, with the sound rising to a crescendo when the Haitians mounted an attack.
The Haitian community reportedly numbers 250,000 in south Florida. There are quite a few Canadians as well, but apparently not many follow soccer.
Still the 11 Canadians on the pitch had silenced the Haitian crowd by midway through the second half.
Osieck, short on strikers, sprung a surprise by starting McKenna up front with Davide Xausa. McKenna is a six-foot-four defender who has also played wing for Canada. But he had had some success as an emergency forward with Hearts in Scotland this season and Osieck's three other possible strikers -- Xausa, Dwayne De Rosario and Paul Stalteri -- had a combined four goals in 67 international appearances going into the match.
De Rosario was relegated to the bench while Stalteri started in midfield.
Osieck's move paid off in the 28th minute when McKenna rose to meet a delicate cross from Daniel Imhof on the right and flicked a perfect header past goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand.
McKenna, who turns 22 on Monday, did it again in the 49th minute, tapping in a well-placed cross from Stalteri.
The goals upped McKenna's account to three in eight appearances for Canada. They also represented a scoring spree for an offensively-starved side that had been shut out 10 times in the 16 previous matches that followed the 2000 Gold Cup title.
 Canada's last two-goal outing was a 2-1 win over Honduras in May 2000 -- 15 games ago.
A goal by Xausa in the 54th minute was called off for offside, taking the Haitian 'keeper off the hook for giving the ball away. It was one of many Haitian mistakes on the night.
McKenna's first goal helped take the wind out of the Haitians, who seemed to be growing in confidence after surviving a pair of close calls in the opening minutes. Xausa shot just wide in the second minute and an Imhof cross deflected wide off Stalteri in the sixth.
The one Haitian chance in the first half was stopped by goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld, who came out to shut down Renel Mompremier at close range in the 26th minute. Golman Pierre hit the side netting in a quiet second half for Haiti.
The Canadian team at this tournament is a young one with the likes of Carlo Corazzin, Craig Forrest, Garret Kusch, Pat Onstad, Paul Peschisolido, Tomasz Radzinski and Mark Watson missing either through injury or retirement.
Chris Pozniak, who just turned 21, won his first cap, coming on as a substitute in the dying seconds.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Costa Rica defeated modest Martinique 2-0. The Costa Rican camp was shocked by news Thursday that the son of director of football Fabio Garnier Nieto had been kidnapped back home. Nieto immediately flew back to Costa Rica
The Costa Ricans, ranked 30th in the world, topped the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying and will represent the region with Mexico and the U.S. at this summer's World Cup.
Martinique, while an associate member of CONCACAF, does not belong to FIFA and as such is unranked.

Best player on the field....

by Winnipeg Fury

Paul Stalteri ! Created both Canada goals and dominated the midfield going both ways.

Imhoff had a great first half and dominated his wing.

Dasovic was solid in his defensive midfield position.

Two great strikes by McKenna ! I actually thought he had a poor first half and was the worst Canadian player on the field in the first half. His timely first goal changed the entire match.
Second half played better and tough to argue with a brace.

Nice professional result. They made me nervous the way they killed the game at times after going 1-0 up, but all in all we looked calm, relaxed and composed. Basically how we should look against a team we're supposed to beat. It's nice to see them show the confidence I didn't feel.

I for one was glad to see McKenna up top and I'm glad to see him bury his chances. Also nice to see Imhof back on the wing where I feel he is far more effective. Hastings had a poor first half and was the only player I didn't want to see on the pitch, but he was strong in the final 30 mins, so I don't really have any complaints. Esp with Bent injured.

On the whole the officiating was poor, but I was wondering if anyone had a good look at the throw-in that led to our second. Personally (and I'm going to back and check the tape later) I was pretty sure it was Haiti's ball. However, how you can call McKenna offside after he lays it back to Xausa is beyond me. Not that it should matter, but it's been so long since we scored three.

A nice effort by the team. I wish Holger would use his subs more and I wish Xuasa and Stalteri would keep their cool better, but that was a nice win in hostile territory.

cheers,
matthew

Gold Cup (R)

by dave_a

I'm sorry but the officials and AR's are off to a terrible start in the Gold Cup. The Costa Rica/Martinique game allowed a goal to stand when the player took a rebound off the post, even though he was six yards beyond the last defender. The Canada goal was such a serious mistake that the AR/official that they should both be terminated after the game. I'm not kidding. How can you be AR if you don't understand the offsiders rule. Sickening.

Metusalen running lines

by Offsider

I agree with you Dave_a. On the first game one of the AR looked older than me and I am only 60. The other AR wasn't fit. To be acting at that level you must pass a severe fitness test required by Fifa. I doubt that Metusalen and the fatso could pass it. Then in the second game the decision to invalidate Xausa's goal was simply ignorant and incompetent. The same as the first goal allowed for Costa Rica. I can forgive mistakes, but not ignorance of the Laws of the Game.

Imhof out for Rogers.

Haiti had a their 2nd good chance but shot was wide.

Mckenna had another good chance also but messed up in trying to pass to Xausa unmarked on right and then took volley off deflection but shot wide just wide.

McKenna Again. Canada scored a third but the Ref made a mistake and annulled the goal. Should be 3 0

I suppose..

One might argue that he is not match fit. It's been a few months. But I agree that a talent like his shouldn't be wasted patrolling the sidelines. I'm sure he'll get his crack (hopefully an extended period) before the tourney is over.

McKenna, with his goal today, and his recent play overall, seems to be a big talent. I hope he can keep up the solid play for some years to come.

Now McKenna's "Goals" he's looking in great form. It's a pretty big shot not only to De Rosario but to the MLS that he's not starting. Many of the articles I read about Canada on the U.S. sites is that De Rosario will be the "key" to Canada's offence.

Mckenna????

by Cyclops

Looks like Mckenna and perhaps Hastings are playing up front!!! Certainly, Holger wouldn't want to use natural strikers in a forward position??? Naturally, the best offense is a lineup filled with defenders...

Although Hastings up front sounds more than a little odd. Whatever he is doing seems to be working so far. At least for our Scottish friend McKenna.

I'm glad Osieck experimented with McKenna up front

by Dave Carmichael

McKenna even if he is a defender, makes a good target man along with a speedier striker. He usually gets his shots on net and at least forces the keeper to make asave, he's strong in the air, and he is tough to move off the ball.

I suggested a month or so ago that he partner Radzinski
because he was scoring regularly in the Scottish Premier league as a fillinn striker.

Full credit to Osieck for taking the risk.

Sorry, sloppy with my lineup

by DJT

Looks like I confused everyone with the way I had Hastings listed. I originally copied the lineup that FSWC posted on the screen at the beginning of the match. It had more than one error (Stalteri was listed on defence) and I forgot to correct all of them, obviously. Sorry.

Yeah

by DJT

Overall I thought it was a poor broadcast, from the errors in the graphics to the commentator not really knowing what was going on (excusable for all the European and South American games when they have to do them from the studio, but why weren't they in Miami?) to the poor choice of camera angles and untimely replays.

Ah well, after such a good game I feel like complaining about something...
