Harvest SupperbyMany thanks to all those who made the Harvest Supper such an enjoyable occasion. Baked potatoes with salads and quiche were followed by plum and gooseberry tarts, Stilton cheese and biscuits. John Bunting almost lost his voice during the auction of produce. Home-made jams and marrows attracted the keenest interest, with Tony Frost delivering the veggies to the successful bidders at the back of the Hall to much ribald commentary. Conversation quickly turned to the subject of making Marrow Rum, as the pile of otherwise unloved vegetables grew ever larger. Matthew Williams was cheered for bidding £6.00 for the last one. The main fundraising was for Tanzania, with a well-supported raffle for Church funds. The only sour note was that some were of the opinion that "charity starts at home". We can do without an insular viewpoint after the World Trade Center tragedy of almost a fortnight ago. Here's hoping for a speedy and complete end to the Foot-&-Mouth and a better year for our farmers. This county wasn't too badly hit by the disease, but markets and the movement of animals were severely disrupted. Respond to this message Goto Forum Home
