Melton Road Railway BridgebyThe main route into the village uses a bridge over the disused railway. The state of this bridge and its suitability for heavier vehicles has been a concern for several years and a single-file system was implemented to avoid two HGVs passing over the bridge at the same time. Confusion over the warning signs and who had right of way, coupled with a dip in the road and the bollards, contributed to several accidents on the bridge. The bollards were removed and, although the single lane markings are still in place, there are incidences of them being ignored. This month (June 2009) we are led to believe the bridge will be demolished and the cutting infilled. I doubt a tunnel for wildlife will be incorporated, but what is of greater concern in the longer term is that there may be an increase in heavy heavy vehicles using the road. In the short term, if traffic is diverted along Butt Lane while Melton Road is closed, the bridge on that route is of even more concern. The only route to the village that doesn't pass over or under a bridge is Glebe Road, which is single track and passes over a level crossing, for which the gates are usually closed. Byron Rhodes, our current County Councillor, has stated that, if re-elected on June 4th, over the next four years he wants to see The implementation of an HGV control network in the Wymondham and Stapleford area currently held up by a local planning dispute.
