As Good As Burdalls

by Fiona Plant

Hi Jake, My Burdalls substitute arrived last week and was duly tested with Sunday dinner. It has officially passed this households' taste test and I shall be passing on the good news to other members of my family. Well done! You are truly a saviour of gravy! Long may it continue.

Gravy Salt is now available

by

I didn't think it would take this long, but thanks to the patient support of many Burdall's fans a good alternative is now available.

It'll take a little while to clear the backlog, but anyone ordering now will receive the product as quickly as possible.

It's £3.00 for 250g including P&P (add 20p per tub if 1st class postage is required). Cheque or Postal Order made payable to Welcome to Wymondham should be sent to me at the address below. It helps things at this end if you also email your address for delivery.

I ordered gravy salt in July 2002 the cheque was processed in September 2002 do I take it that I should now receive the gravy salt, I sent a cheque for £9 for 3 lots (the original price quoted) for 3 different addresses, so I have not included the new request for P&P. Please let me know what to do!!

Whether or not to post email addresses

Hello Catherine, and thank you for your support.

When you post a message to this board, your email address is encoded using JavaScript and invisible to the automated harvesters currently used by spammers. If you disable JavaScript in your browser, then a poster's name won't also be available as a clickable "mailto:" link. Use of the Opera bowser or a pop-up killer allow you to use these features without the annoyance of pop-up adverts.

Including an email address in the body of your message does not protect it, and the same goes for a postal address. You can find several of my email addresses on this board (including at the top) and around the Wymondham site, including the Burdall's page. They are all still in use, and can be used for sending postal address details, if desired.

Gravy Salt Update

by

The packaging is on its way, hooray!

Unfortunately, there'll be a further delay before I know what caramel to order, as the supplier sent samples all of which are quite light brown when mixed up as gravy. Caramel is used to colour products which are golden-brown, red-brown and all the way to near-black, and getting consistent results is an art and science in itself.

After a good deal of thought I've decided I will have to supply the gravy salt at £3 per 250g during the trial. If anyone who has pre-ordered feels this change of price is unfair, please send an SAE for the return of your payment. The cost of postage and packing would be 2/3rds of the price if sent at £3 per lb. The new price is still a bargain, when you compare it with stock-cubes.

The cheques sent in by the early supporters weren't cashed and have now expired . I will try and send an email to this group when the product is ready for mailing, so that the first to order can be the first recipients. I cannot yet give any valid prediction of when the first deliveries will be, nor how long it will take to fulfill the current orders. So, anyone ordering now would still be likely to have quite a long wait.

If anyone would like Gravy Salt of a lighter shade before the main batch is ready, then let me know. It's fairly OK, and not really too light! A smallish number of 250g packs will be available for sending as soon as the packaging arrives. Priority will be given to those who have already ordered.

All the best,

Jake

£3 is not a bad price for such an essential part of the British way of life.

Re: Samples?

by

Hello Stephanie

Space Foods, who used to manufacture Burdall's in Wymondham, Leicestershire, ceased trading about two years ago. By last Christmas there was a great deal of interest in what had happened to the product. Suggestions for other ways to make gravy weren't enough to satisy real Burdall's fans, so I offered to make an alternative if enough people would pre-order. A small number of samples were sent out with the hope that good reports would encourage more to pre-order, but nothing much happened over the summer until the Let's Talk article appeared in East Anglia. Even so, the results of this were a bit of a flash in the pan, but the gravy salt is now nearing readiness.

Gravy Salt

by

I was in luck when my daughter in law found a box of Burdall's hidden at the back of cupboard. It was solid but a few second in the microwave sorted this out. I have been using it very sparingly awaiting for the good news that at last you have the new version ready. I was one of those people, along wiht my sister-in-laws, who originally sent a cheque for the trial sample (which I received). I note from your last message that you are near to delivery. How much do we have to send to ensure a delivery? I have tried Compton's but it just doesn't come close. I have tried to Email the lady who gave the information about the butcher in Fife to see if I could get a telephone number for them but to no evail.

Dear Jake :

Have just stumbled across your Message Forum after trying to obtain Burdall's in vain from supermarkets in the North of England. I am staggered at the number of people who feel as I do about this product and delighted to know that a reasonable facsimile will soon be available. My mother and I have used it for what must be a total of more than 80 years! I am on my last packet so am relieved that help is at hand. I live in Toronto Canada and have relied on relatives and friends to keep me supplied for the last 25 years.
Could you tell me what the cost of a pack would be including postage to Canada. Should I E- mail you my address? Please advise me how to go about ordering it and how you would like the money to be paid.
Thank you for your help

The total price (product plus postage and packing) for sending to Canada is £4.00 per 250g by surface mail, or £5.50 by air. You should get over 30 one-pint servings from 250g.

Payment could be arranged by your contacts in the UK, or I can accept payment by PayPal -- please contact me for my account details if/when you are a member.
