hello people
very good site jake well done
it's nice to see some old places and faces,so whatever happened to the hunters.
cheers jon hobson
The Hunters is back to being a private house. It had a boarded up window last time I passed. There's been quite a bit of building along Edmondthorpe Road, over the past ten years.
I've got some photos of you in your wedding suit (with crutch!). How much will you pay me not to upload them?
Have a read of this for a reminder of "old" Wymondham.
Hi,
I'm looking for a picture of the disused Railway station in Wymondham (now known as The Pines, Butt Lane).
A picture of it as a working station if possible.
Can anyone help me??
The only photo I've been able to find of the former Edmondthorpe & Wymondham Station online is here -- it's quite small.
If you are local, you can check Ralph Penniston Taylor's A History of Wymondham at Melton or Oakham libraries -- photos appear on p.552 et seq.
I should think photos are also likely to appear in several of Trevor Hickman's books of local interest.
If you supply your email address I could send scans from Ralph's book. By the way, email addresses entered on this page are encoded to make them invisible to current harvesters of addresses for spamming.
Jake,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
I'm not local I'm afraid, so if you could e-mail me some pics from the book i would love you forever!!!
It's mostly the building i'd like to see, rather than trains or 'rolling stock' - whatever that is!
(i've become some kind of amateur trainspotter in my search!! OUCH!)
Thank you again for your help,
Jane
The Burdall's flame is carried forward by a butcher in Cupar, Fife. An alternative will soon be available from Wymondham -- the details are repeated several times on this message board but please get in touch directly if you'd find that more convenient.
Burdall's is no longer available in its original form because the small firm that made it in Wymondham ceased operations nearly two years ago.
The slowness in the arrival of my alternative is due to the small amount of pre-orders to help get it off the ground. It will truly be a labour of love!
I too am very interested in purchasing someof your new gravy salt. I have had Burdalls for years and so far nothing has come anywhere close. All my family are searching for a proper alternative so please let me know as soon as it's available and how we can get our hands on it!
BURDALLS IS AVALIABLE FROM A BUTCHERS IN CUPAR FIFE CALLED STEWRATS HE WILL NOT SEND SMALL QAUNTITIES BUT HE WILL IN BULK, I HAVE USED IT AND IT IS THE ORIGIBAL BURDALLS
If Jill could provide me with the address or telephone number it would enable me to buy a bulk order for several of my family. It would be a great surprise Christmas present for them as like the rest of us the alternatives are just not the same.
I FORGOT I HAD POSTED THAT MESSAGE, I WAS SO EXCITED AT GETTING SOME THAT I DIDN,T CHECK. I DON,T KNOW THE PHONE NUMBER BUT THE BUTCHERS IN STEWARTS IN BONNYGATE CUPAR FIFE. MY OLD NEIGHBOUR GETS IT FOR ME AND I HAVE JUST GOT £25 WORTH BUT IT WOULD COST A FORTUNE TO POST.IF YOU WANT TO TRY IT I HAVE PLENTY SO COULD SPARE A FEW BAGS.
Jill you mention that this butcher is goiung to do mail order this year. Can you let me know who told you this or any other details - I would be very interested
yes it's me that has the burdalls and yes i'm going to start mail order feb-march and you'll be able to get as much as you like the gold dust is magic

Did you ever find out about the Butcher who was going to make and sell by mail order Burdalls Gravy salt. Have tried for over 6 months to find an alternative without success.
The "right stuff" is available in small quantities right now. There's yet another delay in doing a main mix, because a storage bin arrived without a lid, but I hope to be able to start sending out the backlog soon.
It's £3 for 250g, cheque/P.O. payable to Welcome to Wymondham and sent to me at the address below.
Thanks for the interest!

I must be a sad git, surfing the net for any reference to Burdall's Gravy Salt! Is your replacement available to anyone. Please respond to andy@hamment.fsnet.co.uk and let me know. I know of at least four families who regret the passing of Burdall's so the demand is there!
I make and sell an alternative to Burdall's, which is easier to use and found to be satisfactory by most. I hope it's better than "the next best thing"!
Full details are available at www.oldjake.co.uk, including online payment options.
My family have used Burdalls for many years up until 18 months ago when Asda stopped stocking it saying they could not get hold of any. Since then we have trawled Tesco, Safeway, Sainsburys, co-op, Jacksons etc. as well as many corner shops to no avail. If anyone can locate any please email me as I have not had decent gravy since then. I have even saved my last empty packet for nostalgic reasons. we are willing to travel in order to sock up if anyone knows where there is still a supply!
Since Space foods for whatever reason have gone, has any other company picked up the rights to manufacture
this product. Not only do we like the product but it was Gluten Free which meant our grandson could have it
D. I. Stewarts the butchers in Cupar, (Fife) are selling Burdalls gravy salts. He is toying with the idea of selling it on the internet next year if he can get enough interest in areas to make it worth while posting it out. He sells from his shop just now in bags of roughly 1lb but does not post it out as yet so if you know anyone who lives in Fife tell them Cupar is a great place for christmas shopping and ask them to get you some while they are there.
What a relief to see your message.
I would like to order some - but not in the net as we don't do that.
Would it be possible for you to give me the whole address and I will write and order some.
Thank you so much
It's been part of our lives since we were children!!!
Best wishes

We are tracing our Veasey/Hickman/Hopcroft/Exton family in Wymondham and Edmondthorpe - the Veaseys named on the Wymondham war memorials are my great great Uncles- and wondered if any one has any pre 1st World War school photos from Wymondham school. We have some Edmondthorpe school photos with most of the people named on them, but have none from Wymondham school. We would be most greatful if anyone can help.
The only photos I've seen are from the 1920s/30s. I've heard of a collection being destroyed by their owner shortly before her death, which was obviously a great shame. Trevor Hickman may be able to help, but I guess you've already asked him.
If you could lend your photos for scanning, or the negatives of photographic copies, or provide your own scans, I'd be very grateful.
"Cloggy" Fisher has very kindly sent me a school photo dating from about 1916. Four members of staff are shown, along with 17 boys and 14 girls from Cloggy's father's generation. I'll pass it on to the parish magazine and get it uploaded with some more recent school photos, which also seem to be edging into ancient history
Burdall's Gravy Salt is no longer made in Wymondham. There's a butcher in Scotland who sells gravy salt (I don't know whether it is to the same recipe) and there are solid and liquid varieties available in supermarkets which some users find acceptable. Finally, there will soon be gravy salt available from Wymondham once more. I have offered to produce it for those who don't like or can't get the alternatives. You'll find details by browsing this message-board or using the search box on the homepage.
Interesting. My wife has a small stock of Burdalls but her sister cannot find it any more. Do you intend to produce it commercially? please advise when availableand how to purchase please.
