Map of Wymondham

by

Some of you may remember me as an ex-resident of Wymondham - Mum (Margaret Lambert) still lives there although she is due to move soon (sob, sob! no one left of the Lamberts in Wymondham!).

Anyway, I had in my possession a lovely old map of Wymondham - full size (not the parish one that included Edmonthorpe and others) but full size of just Wymondham itself. I had it up on my wall of my old flat just to preserve the fact that is where I come from! Unfortunately, being in the wrong place, the sun has now faded out the map - aww!

I asked Mum if she had a spare one, but it seems that she only had the parish one. Can anyone help me with another copy? or lead me to someone who can do another for me?

Im proud of Wymondham and want to keep it up on the wall! Show it off to my friends in Bristol!

Look forward to your help and if anyone has one or advice, pls respond to this mail AND speak to my mother.

Many thanks for your support

Jemima

Salisbury Family History

by

I am researching my family history and have found my Grandfather, Ernest George Salisbury, went to King Edward VI Grammar Schhol in Wymondham. I have a book he received as a prize in 1899. Where was the school and when did it close.
Any information on the Salisbury family or the Artherton or the Handack famnilies would be a bonus.

Email correspondence with Tim Salisbury led to the conclusion that he should continue his researches at Norfolk's Wymondham.

Great work, Jake. I can't quite believe that technology has reached sleepy Wymondham! Whatever next!

The Berkeley Arms

by

(This message was originally posted on 22nd November, 1999.)

My sister Cathy and her partner Nick have asked me to let you know that they are the new tenants of the Berkeley Arms and will be moving in around 10th December. They hope to open around 17th December. They have two children, Emma who is 12 and Joanne who is 11. They are moving from Cheshire where Nick works as a Head Chef in a hotel. Nick is originally from Liverpool and Cathy is originally from Bletchley near Milton Keynes. They are both in their mid thirties. They have visited Wymondham on a number of occasions recently and are looking forward to moving there and hope you will regard The Berkeley Arms as your pub. I'm not sure how often this website is accessed but if anyone is interested in seeing sample menus or would like more information on when the Berkeley Arms will definitely open then please e-mail me and I will do my best to keep you up-to-date.

Regards,

Pauline Wright

I've let the Cottage Stores and the Bottom Shop have the details, so they can spread the word. The parched peeps of Wymondham look forward to the re-opening of their pub.

Barometers!!!

by

(This message was originally posted on 9th September, 1999.)

We've recently purchased a barometer and in order to set it correctly we need to know the height of Wymondham above sea level - I'm sure someone out there knows this - any ideas???

P.S. I think the web site is an excellent idea - we're sending the address to a pen pal in Australia so they can get an idea of the things that are going on. It would be nice if someone could include some photos of the village.

An OS map to check the elevation? As for photos, I hope the sketches in the Gallery will more than do for now. As you know, the work on the watermains has spoilt current opportunities for photos. It would be nice to use the ones from the WI project. And how about some from the pantos?

Huddlestone Family history

by

(This message was originally posted on 23rd August, 1999.)

I am researching my family history which was strongly influenced by Wymondham and would welcome any contact with information regarding the Huddleston family.

The earliest record appears to have been a Christopher Huddleston in 1650-ish, then a strong line from a big family starting in the early 1700's until at least the early 1900's.

Many thanks,

Alan Huddleston

Thankyou

by

I would just like to say thank you for your help. A few emails, phone calls, and visits later and I have now found a lot more about my relatives, have seen the very pretty village of Wymondham and met some new people.

The Huddleston family was in Wymondham from the 1700's until early 1900's, prior to this they came from Edmonthorpe which is where my research is currently centered. Post early 1900's, many of the Huddleston's had ventured to Leicester and surrounding areas.

Many thanks to all, and to Jake for this web site.

Maybe

by

Hi,

It seems likely that you might be if you traced the family history back far enough. The Huddleston family have origins back to 1200 in Cambridgeshire and Northumbria with links to Yorkshire.

My own family come from Wymondham as far back as the late 1600's and prior to that in Edmonthorpe. As yet I have been unable to establish a link to the main brances in Cambridge or Northumbria.

Have you any lines back to Wymondham or Leicestershire?

Having recently discovered the Wymondham Website, I have only just read your message for family. My gr, gr, gr, gr, gr (!) aunt, Frances Bursnall bn 10.1.1749/50 married John Huddleston bn 11.6.1749, son of Christopher and Sarah on 8.4.1776 in Wymondham, which may make me a very distant relative of yours!
