recoil spade question (Waffentrager)

Hello,

I'm sketching out a diorama idea for my Cromwell 12.8cm Waffentrager and have a question :

For self-propelled guns that have recoil spades (I've also heard them called recoil braces), would they be deployed (down) when firing in an urban environment (with paved/cobblestone/etc..) streets, or would they remain in the traveling (up) position?

Down if they are braced against a curb, pothole or wall? I can't see them being very useful otherwise. But they look like they might interfere with efficient operating of the platform when in the up position.

I want to place this vehicle in an urban setting, but really like the look of the spades in the down position.

I know it's a "paper panzer", but I like to interject a little reality into my fantasy....

Maybe a bigger question is : Would you even fire a gun of this size (especially with an open firing compartment) in an enclosed urban environment? The Russians were blasting away with their 203mm tracked howitzers in Berlin, so I guess it is survivable...

I've posted this in the General section as well.

Any information or opinions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Tim
