Herbert Elsner's Panther D, autumn 1943.

Further to my question recently regarding the markings of Panzer Regiment 23 and it's Panther's in the autumn of 1943 near Krivoy Rog, here are a couple of pics of Herbert Elsner's ausf D around that period.

The unit received it's first Panthers in mid August 1943. Looking at Herbert Elsner's Panther D there seems to be a strange mix of features. It has two headlights mounted on the glacis (according to Tom Jentz this apparantely changed to just one headlight in July 1943) but it also has the rainguard over the sight aperture (apparantely an August 1943 feature). If this rainguard was field mod job in autumn '43 then how come there is no field mod added ring for the anti aircraft machine gun on the cuppola?

A couple more questions. It's possible the road wheels were the older 16 bolt variety and not the reinforced ones with the 16 rivets? I've seen pics of Panthers supposedly from as late as August '43 production with no reinforcing rivets and just the 16 bolts. Obviously I can't tell in the slightest with all that mud covering the wheels.

How about the spare track links on the turret side on ausf Ds? How were they fixed on? Were they permanently welded on as there weren't any attachment points on ausf D turrets were there???

Thanks to anyone who can help.
