Checking the Schiffer book "Germany's Tiger tanks DW to Tiger I design production and modifications" I noticed the interesting production output figures in page 68. Couple examples:
September 43, per week tanks: 8, 15, 13, 27, 22.
May 44, per week tanks: 0, 4, 25, 24, 47.
These are only two sample months, but most of them follow the same pattern: Some weeks in the month have a very low output, others have extremely high output.
Please discard from the whole thinking the weeks with "0" tanks output: the table is arranged by 5 weeks per month, and we know that not all months have 5 weeks.
Coming myself from the automotive industry, where cars are mass-produced on a line with many steps, each having a more or less balanced cycle time (very basically described), being the output regular, I have wondered what kind of curious production system was used for Tigers.
Just speculating, it looks like a production area being filled with a batch of hulls, which are finished "all at the same time", till the production floor is free, then start again. The weeks with low output perhaps being the last ones from the former batch, due to delays caused by eventual reworks or whatever. Such a system might fit with vehicles produced in relatively low outputs like some today's "hand made" luxury cars.
Please anybody has any idea about the matter, or knowledge?
The whole might have an impact about introduction dates of features. We tend to think of them as if applied in nice ordered assembly line fashion, but the production system might explain an introduction by blocks of vehicles.
