Yes, that sounds like a fair hypothesis, and I do believe that the experiments with the IIIG led to the standardised system on the IV at the very least.

I would also agree with Jentz/Doyle that factory camo painting of both IIIG and IV started in August/September 44 just like at most of the other factories. Certainly the schemes on many late IIIGs and IVs look too similar to be unit-applied. More contraversially, many appear to have been on a 'dark' base (i.e not dunkelgelb) including the suspension, but whether that's rotbraun, rotprimer or olivgrun is really wide open to speculation (I have my own preferences, and they aren't the same as anyone else's in print afaik. But hey, popular and unpopular opinions are exactly the same!).
